I know what you mean, is it just because I pull for Subaru a little more? I think most of us have followed these cars from the very beginning, and my impression has always been that Subaru tried to make it a little more refined. More neutral handling, and a nicer interior. Not that the Toyota offerings were bad. For the second gen I think I want to support Subaru. I love both brands so I could flip a coin to decide really. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

We could also get into any qualified mechanic can work on either, there is nothing mystic about a flat-four, but that argument gets lost here.

Anyone here had the 86 as their first choice but went BRZ instead?

If I was to buy a new one it would be the GR hands down. Looks and a slightly more oversteery setup.

I would still trust a Subaru tech more to work on a boxer engine. Not that Toyota techs haven’t worked on them or aren’t capable of doing a good job. It’s not a Toyota design and it’s the heart of the car. It wouldn’t keep me from buying the GR86 though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I just wonder if that makes any real difference on such a low volume car. Would the average Toyota tech have worked on a FA20D? I have no idea myself but it’s worth considering IMO. I know it’s not some hyper exotic engine, but it’s set up way different than every other Toyota engine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Following to hear more about the differences in handling. I like the idea of the GR handling for a little fun at reasonable corner-speeds. I don't want something that sticks like glue. But I don't want a Mustang death spin either. Whatever car I buy would be on all-seasons.
Side-topic- I feel I have to complain that so many car forums have people posting about looks. Anyone can look at a magazine or visit the dealer to decide if they like it. Arguing about looks is like arguing whether blue or silver is better. But I'm starving for understanding the driving dynamics. How it slides during turn-in, mid-turn, corner exit, on public roads around mid-rpm (not drifting, but just a little movement on a safe on-ramp or something). Back on topic- Also wondering if I got a BRZ and it 'stuck' too well, could some things be done to mimic the GR more? (Besides obviously getting all-season tires.)

I don’t think it’ll stick too well, not if the old car is anything to go by. The suspension has a TON of anti-squat built in so these cars put power down pretty poorly. If anything you’ll need some extra camber up front to balance it out.

Early days Toyota technicians were screwing up the oiling of a certain part during the valve recall and other major engine works, so much so Toyota had to specify a bulletin and advice on the correct procedure. heheh. Subaru did not have this issue. |
