A lot of cars failed after the recall work was done. It's a very precise procedure and they're simply not competent enough to perform it.

California is forcing recall victims into the "if it doesn't break, you can't register it" camp. I would feel a lot more comfortable if a Subaru dealership with experience working on boxer engines did the work, but I have an FRS so it it has to be done by Toyota.

Well, in that case, I would suggest taking the supercharger off the car, having the recall work done, drive it for a couple of thousand miles, then, if it's running OK, put the supercharger back on.

I'm glad that I don't live in California anymore; up here in Washington, the state is even discontinuing smog checks.

There have been failures from both sides of the fence. The Subaru techs don't have much more experience with this particular boxer engine than to the Toyota techs I don't believe. Isn't the engine unique to the 86?

Looks like Subaru has been using boxer engines for a while - "Since the Subaru 1000 of 1966[17] the water-cooled front-mounted flat-four and flat-six engines have been used by Subaru in all of its mid-sized cars, including the Impreza, Legacy, Outback, and SVX. The Forester and Tribeca SUVs, BRAT and Baja pickup trucks, and BRZ sports car also use boxer engines"

That would be ideal, but is the most expensive option for me. The cheapest local shop I found quoted me $800 to uninstall the supercharger and another $600 to install it. Plus I don't have the stock parts anymore.

No, I realize that, I meant this SPECIFIC boxer which is the one that is having the sealant problem. None of the other boxers involved in the recall are the same engine, and are not having this result. It is only the BRZ and the FRS.
