Vehicle Mileage: 71,070
Vehicle Make: Scion Mileage After Recall Performed: 71,640 Symptom(s): Rough starts, lots of white exhaust during enriched warmup cycle, backfire, hesitation, greatly reduced power in low ends of gears. No visible oil on dipstick when checked 500 miles after recall. Failure: TBD State:NY Is Dealership Offering Repair: Dropped off at dealer 3/8/19; requested pics of timing cover sealant, oil pan, pickup, and screen upon disassemly. Update 3/11/19 - Dealer texted saying started work today and will keep me updated. Update 3/12/19 - Service manager called to get my authorization for full tear down, described as standard procedure in "these cases." Said I would be liable financially only if they found no issues at all, but he assured me that wouldn't be the case. I gave it. He also assured me that he is planning on doing a full long-block replacement. Currently not able to provide a loaner car, but may be able to tomorrow once he gets approval from corporate. Being without a loaner since 3/8 doesn't sit well with me, but in every other respect my service manager has been great to work with throughout this mess and previously. Will continue to update. Update 3/15/19 - Dealership confirms inspector approved full engine replacement; new short block, new heads, new cams, etc. Said worn rings sent metal through engine, wearing bearings, cam, rods, journals, etc. Declined to say what caused that. Said severe smoking upon start caused by overfilling engine oil, which collected in the heads. Will be about four weeks until parts are available and will provide a loaner.

Im from Chicago but I go to school in Iowa so I drive my car back and forth between there, its about a three hour drive. I took my car in at the beginning of the year and the dealer ship requested extra time to do the repair(approx a week instead of the typical three days. so they can go slow.) I said sure no big deal. well, I ended up having to take the loaner car back to school because the dealer took about two weeks to finish. I drove back on a Monday morning to pick up the car and then drive back to school the same day. on my way back about two hours into the drive my motor. blew. according to the dealer. a piece of metal from the valve cover broke free, shot threw the valve cover and all the oil leaked out onto the side of my car. the dealer shipped the car back to Chicago. PULLED THE MOTOR and installed a new valve cover to "confirm rod knock"( it took two weeks. just for the valve cover to come in). they had told me if the valve cover didn't work they would order me a brand new motor and swap it in. well that wasn't true. currently it's been two months, the car still has no motor. I still have a rental and they are still waiting on a short block and some other parts
Vehicle Mileage: ~35K Vehicle Make: 2013 Scion FR-S Mileage After Recall Performed: ~>200 Symptom(s): spun bearing/ rod knock Failure: hole in valve cover State: IL Dealership Offering Repair: Dealer offered to source another short block and some. other necessary parts |

Hi All,
Does this recall apply to all 2013 FRS's? I had mine at the dealership in January for an oil change and they checked and said there weren't any recalls. Just checked online and it's saying there aren't any recalls for it... It's 2013 FRS 10 Series It wouldn't surprise me a bit if there was a recall and they blew it off to avoid the work. |

It's only a select couple months of the '13 production run.
A specific lot of valve springs were installed then. The rest of the year got a different lot of springs that meet all the specs. So, no. Not all '13 models are affected.

Vehicle Mileage: ~60k kms
Vehicle Make: 2013 Scion FR-S Mileage After Recall Performed: ~500 kms Symptom(s): car will not start (dash is dead the only light that will come on is the door, not even the parking brake light. All accessories function normally) So far has hindered the car 3 minutes to one hour randomly. Slight drop in power at seemingly random intervals Failure: unknown State: AB Dealership Offering Repair: Will bring car to them after I finish working out of town (assuming car starts and takes me home) Well I am glad I am not the only one having issues after the recall was done. This is frustrating. |

2013 FR-S engine seized
Vehicle Mileage: approx 132,000km
Vehicle Make: Scion Mileage After Recall Performed: approx 250km Symptom(s): After the recall was performed I had returned the car to the dealership to correct an oil leak. When the technician took the car on a test drive the engine stalled and would not start. The dealer towed the car back and could not spin the engine. Failure: The dealer told me they think it was a bottom end failure. They found metal shavings in the pan. The heads have no damage. State: Ontario, Canada Is Dealership Offering Repair: Yes, Toyota Canada is providing a new short block |

Vehicle mileage: 37,000
Vehicle make: Scion FRS - A/T + Turbo Vehicle mileage after recall: ~300 Symptoms: RPMs Revving high when shifting gears and ultimately motor blew with a massive hole. Failure: Threw a rod, but I still need to dissect the engine to really see what’s going on. State: Las Vegas, Nevada - Autonation Toyota Dealer offering repair: Said they’d inspect it, but the Service Manager told me I had a 99% chance I’d have to come out of pocket to fix because I’m boosted.. So I didn’t bring it back to them in fear I’d be down another few grand. |

Toyota (and likely Subaru) are leaving the responsibility for the costs of the cockups with the dealers by the looks of it i.e. there seems to be no standard response to this. Toyota have given dealers the instructions on how the fix is to be done and the dealers that cock it up are being held responsible to the owners for the costs to fix it. Some dealers are taking responsibility for the errors, others are trying to dodge it. |
