I've never messed up a stock stud either but I always run them on gently.
Highly advise against anti seize or any type of thread lubricant. Has a drastic effect on torque.

To be clear, I'm on my original wheel studs/nuts. I only became curious after reading all the horror stories. Wheels are removed a few times annually.
The stock acorn nuts are pretty sloppy but, handled accordingly...

I think the biggest issue with the stock studs is poor tolerances on the studs and lugs combined with speed from an impact. I run my down on a super low hand tight setting then give it a few whacks when snug then hand torque. They always seem to fail from galling.

No extra points for speed. I do it all by hand.

Yep, this tool, applied with "two squeaks and a grunt" has served me well for the past 75 years.

I've converted one rear wheel to ARP studs and plan to do the rest as I get to it. In the meantime I have ARP studs in the car with instructions to anyone who I might have do tire work to replace the entire wheel if one stud breaks.

I never had an issue with the stock lug nuts, however the Toyota dealer that would rotate my tires when i first got it had a hell of a time with them and wound up crossthreading 2 of them leading to breaking 2 of the studs. Stopped taking it to Toyota after that and never had another problem.
I have been running stock studs and aftermarket lugs for about 7 years with zero issues. I also run a small dab of pressure lube on the studs and have never had a torque issue (YMMV). |

They do a lot of cool videos. It’s nice seeing some of the stuff old timers taught me to be true when he did his mythbusting videos.

A buddy of mine used Neverseize on everything from steak to seafood. When he was installing brakes, he put it on the lugs of his Ford Exploder. After about a month, it developed a vibration. He took it to a shop to have his tires rebalanced and guess what.
A. The tires needed balancing. B. You never use neverseize with seafood. C. Loose nuts |
