i wanted to go this route instead of adding a separate air cooler for a cleaner install.

I emailed two vendors about this specific radiator. So the sales rep from fteightysix.com said they called skunk2 and said it can be used as a transmission cooler or engine oil cooler.
CS rep from ft86speedfactory.com said its only for engine oil cooler.

Not trying to put them on blast or anything. But im hoping i can use the built in oil cooler for the transmission coz auto trans tend to overheat at the track really fast. And use a separate oil cooler for the engine. My oil temp went up to 257°F on a cold windy trackday.

I have a Setrab core cooler for my AT, still need to get an oil cooler for my engine..
@Weapon86 this is a good read, and the company I got my cooler kit from for my AT: http://starkperformanceparts.com/pro...lopment-part-1 http://starkperformanceparts.com/pro...lopment-part-2 http://starkperformanceparts.com/pro...lopment-part-3 These guys know their stuff. I had them do the install for me since I'm local, and they know stuff WAY over my head.

how much did it cost you with the install? And are you taking the car to the track too?
i noticed stark performace AT cooler is using the same core as perrin oil cooler so im assuming the built in oil cooler on the skunk2 ultra would work the same way? Same thing as one of the sales rep told me.

According to CJ At Skunk, It could be used as either. It would work just as efficiently as a engine oil cooler or Trans cooler. He did not tell me, i didnt ask to be honest, if it was primarily designed to be a engine oil cooler. I would assume it was designed as a trans cooler as thats more common in a radiator then engine oil cooling, but thats just an assumption. I have installed the radiator on a car with a C38 kit, but we just plugged the cooler for now until the owner has an appointment at the local Hose fitting shop for custom lines. I plan on running this same radiator on my C38 equipped car also so im going to have 2 set of lines made. i can get more made if someone wants get a kit from us. I will say this is a huge.. HUGE radiator. it took a little work to get it in and the hood closed, but some of that was due to the intake pipe for the Blower. so far the radiator has not even come close to getting hot. even trying to beat on it temps get a degree or 2 above the tstat then immediately drop back down. I plan on running the fan cooled Mishimoto trans cooler but maybe ill try this and then a separate engine oil cooler..

But Setrab is super high quality, and definitely go for the thermostatic option. Michael knows his stuff. I don't know if they'll do other installs (idk if mine was a one-off) but it wouldn't hurt to ask him.

I ordered this rad and will be installing in 3 weeks. I'll post pictures of the install. If anyone installs this before please share what fitting they used for the upper port.

I just got a reply from skunk2 to confirm what sort of threads the oil ports have.
I was told that its 3/4-16 SAE. This was also mentioned in another thread, I just wanted to double check. If I am not mistaking its a fitting with straight threads that seal on a O-ring. I think I have found a 90deg hose end from fragola that bolts straight on. It looks compact enough to do the job, but of course I could be wrong... ![]() Hopefully it will fit, and be a better option then using crossovers and give fewer potential leak points. |

I'm interested to hear how effective it is compared to a quality air cooled cooler with track use.

The oil port threads are not 3/4-16 sae....
I just recived some expensive hose ends in 3/4-16, they are to small... Borrowed a set of thread gauges, 14tpi was the result. A bsp fitting wont thread in, but a 1/2" npt fitting does... Kind of pissed right now, after verifying with skunk2 what threads the ports have. Ordering expensive fittings and they wont fit... |
