This weekend was a waste of effort. I replaced my door speakers with some Quart drivers that I stuck into some carved out stock speaker housings I found online. I knew that the stock speakers are 2ohm and the Quarts are 4ohm but should still work. After replacing the door panels and trying out the new speakers, I realized that the stock speakers are actually partial subs, carrying most of the low end. The Quarts are just mid drivers, so bye bye bass. Would have been fine if I was adding a sub. I'll be putting the stocks back in for now.

Also, the 4" speakers I bought to replace the dash 3" mids were too deep. There's some weird plastic inside the speaker area that I don't feel like dremeling out. Sigh...

I will replace the rears with some better 4" speakers. I have some rear brackets that I dremeled to fit the 4" speakers nicely. The whole 2ohm setup really screws with the upgrade options.

the plastic behind the dash speakers under the speakers is the ductwork for the hvac system. i definitely wouldn't recommend cutting through it.

if you did the amp bypass harness, those mb quarts would work. just wouldn't take advantage of the amp, which is a questionable advantage the way it is anyways.

Thanks, yeah. I didn't want to get into a whole stereo replacement thing (yet). I've gone down that rabbit hole with my previous cars.

I figure Scion went with a 2ohm system to get a louder sound with less power but it messes with the upgrade options.

Changed the clutch fluid.

Couldnt tell the change on the feel from the pedal, somehow it engages more linearly.. it could be just me imagining.

Went to a dyno day. Got to see a visual of what the car is putting out.
Delicious FlexFuel (current tank is at about 70% E), Borla UEL Headers, stage 2 tune.
The rest of the exhaust and intake are all stock.
I see no need to do anything else power-wise unless I decide to boost.
EDIT: yeah... ignore the green line. That's just an estimate of what it would read on a Dynojet.

Yeah, I expected improvement. I didn't expect the dip to be completely gone. I thought I was feeling a slight dip still, but that's probably me just wishing for more power in general

Today... Got a Carista OBD2 dongle delivered today. Went into the vehicle settings and got rid of silly behaviors like the doors locking when I'm washing/detailing the car. Stopped headlights coming on when I open the door. Killed seatbelt chimes. I'm happy.

Also... I found my rear window lacking adorable toddler girls with katanas. Fixed that!

Yesterday, ripped out all of this:

Aaaand forgot to take a pic of the pile of new parts before we got install happy, but it's been replaced by a JDL EL Catted header, Motiv overpipe, Motiv catted front pipe, and a Perrin 2.5 inch catback, nothing anyone around here hasn't really seen before. Also installed those fancy JDM STi exhaust hangers that all the 86 guys have been buying up lately like people were doing with toilet paper in March of 2020.

Everything came apart and went together surprisingly well for a car that's got 4 New England winters and one Southern one under its belt, and it sounds great. The one little gripe I've got is that the left exhaust tip pokes out from the bumper a little farther than the right, and I can't really do much about that...but a very minor thing that few will ever notice.

Credit to @BatStig for having a great setup that I was able to replicate.

Looks pretty good. I'm planning on a Borla UEL, but wonder if a catless FP with resonator would add much more. I don't want any more noise than I can avoid. I'm running just a Borla axleback and E85 now.

I doubt you'll see much more. You certainly won't feel it.

IMO, the torque dip is all in the header. E85/Flexfuel gives you just a little more. On my car, I just switched the header and everything else is stock (still have one cat), and the dyno looks really close to people's cars with intakes and full open exhaust. Anything else is just to get the sound you want. You might manage to get a little more top end with a more expensive header, but IMO, it's not worth it. If I ever go turbo, I'll end up swapping the header anyway, so no point getting crazy with exhaust.

Maybe I'm weird, but I really like the stock exhaust sound with headers. It's quiet like stock, but with a very pronounced growl it didn't have before.

Backtracking just a little...

May 29th, after 39 years of living on this planet and 22 years of legally driving (26 otherwise), I finally hydroplaned. It was like a weird rollercoaster... and then a backwards rollercoaster... into a guard rail.

So I actually ended up driving home like this when the tow truck didn't show LOL. A long 14 miles going 30mph to be safe.

Tow truck got her the next day.

The shop sent updates as they got along.

I picked her up yesterday! Of course it was pouring all the way to baltimore. I've never been so alert and nervous in this car. This platform has a way of making you more alert but the nervousness was definitely the rain factor. Temps dropped from 100 to 73 in a few minutes and we actually had golfball sized hail when I went to pick up the car.

So to celebrate, since the shop had no idea how to connect the reverse light setup, I took the day off to get that sorted. They cut the wires when removing the bumper so it was fun putting it all back together again.

And I figured while I was at it, might as well hook up the mods that have been laying around.

Dark blue alcantara shift boot with TRD stitching. I ordered this custom from an instagrammer.

And finally used that headlight adapter wiring i put together to make the fender turn signal garnishes plug and play.

So yeah. Been driving a Nissan POS rental for the last month and I'm glad insurance exists. $11k from them and $500 from me
