Our granddaughters and I drained and took the above deck swimming pool down and packed up all the pool toys. According to them, summer is now over - no more fun -

Millennium Falcon folds spacetime differently. It's how we made the Kessel run in under 12 parsecs.

This is a project that started during the first month of COVID... having to work from home made me realize my current desk situation in my home office was less than ideal and I needed more desktop space for reviewing plans. My original desk was also designed and made by me, but for my old room at home so both my space and needs have changed.

I built the concept in sketchup, and then translated all parts to CAD so that I had a working set of plans. This has proven to be a very reliable method to catch assembly issues and general fit concerns at the design stage. I had basically no hiccups from the plans to actual construction.

Got busy and the project was shelved for a while, so I've had the parts cut and sitting in my dad's shop for nearly 3 years. Recently got a bit of a kick in the ass to get the project done. I'm just glad I bought the wood back then... as this plywood has nearly tripled in price since then.

The main building material is 3/4" White oak cabinet grade plywood, which has been the material of choice for almost all of the furniture I've built for my condo (and pieces that my dad built for my room as a kid, that are still with me today).

Cabinet boxes are made of 1/2" MDF with undermount drawer slides.

It's a fairly large desktop at 30" x 76". It's approximately 18" wider than my current desk. At this width, 3/4" plywood is not really adequate to support itself so at the end there will be a small aluminum angle / T fastened across the span on the underside to provide rigidity.

It features nut insert hardware to attach the cabinet box, and rear cable raceway to catch all of my pc, monitor, music production, etc. cables that are currently less than ideally cable managed on my first setup. All cabinet joinery is 1/2" dados and will only require glue for final assembly. From the front, 100% of fasteners are concealed for a very clean look. The back is against a wall.

The final setup will have 2x vertical 24" monitors, and 1x 34" ultrawide monitor on arms. All power and cables will be fully concealed on the back of the unit.

Here was the final test fitting a few days ago:

As of today, all finishing is now complete and the wood grain is POPPIN' :

I decided to try something new to me that countless youtube furniture builders are using. This has been finished in Rubio Monocoat "Dark Oak". I'm extremely pleased not only with how it looks, but just how easy it was to apply compared to traditional varnish. It just took a bit more time in the wood preparation, but the results are amazing so far.

Pool tables make great platforms for applying finish lol.

Letting it cure for a week, then final assembly and installation in my space to follow.

I'll update again when it's installed and the setup is complete!

They serve no purpose. They aren't shade trees, not wind block, they make a huge mess, nothing grows under them, and they block the sun from the back of the yard where we want to put a lot more raised beds for veggies. Plus I'm thinking I might build a shop in the rear left.

DO IT !

My neighbour has 2 Pine trees that hang over my driveway…

They do seasonal things… all year long.

Last month they buried the car in needles just like in a winter storm.
I discover dents from pine cones…

My 17 yr old car that sits outside for all 12 months looks to have been shit on
if I don’t keep up with the beauty maintenance required for it to be presentable.

It has become quite the alcoholic as I found that 70 Percent Isopropyl Alcohol seems to be the only cure for the tree gum they
drop and the sun cures that matter close to being permanent. Im too cheap to get a car cover that would maybe solve the issue.

I also have 2 giant spruce trees on the front lawn which I really like, they are even worse than the pines when I dare park closer to them.
During the summer that winter car gets to clutter up the roadway and slow the traffic a bit in my neighbourhood just to save me a few hrs of cleanup.

Apparently they inspect the wire mesh placement, I joke you not. You'd think they'd be available immediately for inspection all the time considering the permit cost $300 and took 4 months to approve. I hate this county.

That reminds me of my plan to reduce the peak where my driveway meets the sidewalk. I just wanted to knock in down so that my cars wouldn't scrape going into and out of the driveway.

I applied to the city for approval/permit. They sent out an inspector to check out my plan. He said he couldn't approve that modification because is was against the disabilities act. I restated my case that I wanted to reduce the grade (peak) and that would make it easier for disabled folks to cross it!

I said that he understood but "rules are rules".

Back in my drinking days, I would have just gone out there about midnight with a jackhammer and a couple sacks of sac-crete and "fixed it"!

The inspector won't know if they never inspect it.
