2026 Toyota MR2 and Celica

Rumors of the 2026 Toyota MR2 and Celica have been circulating for a while. A spate of recent news seems to suggest they might actually be happening this time:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/peterly...anual-gearbox/

If (and it's still a big IF) they really happen, with the rumored spec -

Gas engine (no EV or hybrid nonsense)
6 speed manual transmission
AWD (!)
400 hp 2 liter turbo

and IF the pricing is close to rumors ($65k for the MR2, $40-$45k for the Celica) one of these could well be what finally tempts me out of my 2019 BRZ.

Maybe Subaru might be tempted to finally put a turbo in the BRZ to more effectively compete with these?

We can dream!

@$65K it's a no for me. I LOVED my '85 MR2 and would buy another similar in a hot minute but at that price it won't approach being the same type of car.

Those would all be pretty unfortunate changes to the MR2 DNA.

Meanwhile, I still think the Celica is a perfect opportunity for a PHEV. A variant of the GR Yaris/Corolla powertrain with 25-30 miles of all-electric would be excellent.

Akio Toyoda really wants all his sports cars back before Toyota fully shitcans him and turns the entire lineup into rolling iphones to "keep up with the times"

Let him cook you corporate mooks!

We should be grateful for his enthusiast presence in the automotive world.

I'm not usually excited about new Toyota models, but these rumored specs for the MR2 and Celica are hard to ignore. A manual AWD coupe with a powerful turbo engine? That's a recipe for fun. If the price is right, I might actually be tempted to trade in my trusty old car. But let's be honest, these are just rumors for now. We'll have to wait and see if Toyota can deliver on the hype.

So if that thing is actually a tease, it does corroborate with the current set of Rumors:

-MK6/A100 Supra is apparently going to be an in-house Toyota design, since BMW is canning the Z4.
-8th gen Celica...this is somewhat recent. AWD with big power, maybe a ressurection of the All-trac? What does this do to the GR Yaris and the GR Corolla (if it replaces one of them)?
-MR2 teased many times. No idea what its gonna be. maybe EV?
-next gen GR86 supposedly will no longer have Subaru participating so its an in-house Toyota design. I think the GR Yaris/Corolla's 3cyl turbo was the rumored new powerplant.
-GR-GT3, yeah we know about it, the Benz AMG GT lookalike. almost 900hp V8 hybrid now is it? Seems to also have a brand identity crisis as they don't seem to know if its going to be a Lexus badged product or a Toyota badged one.

Would be great if a mk3 86 is on the cards and is a turbo rwd platform, kind of like a remake of an S15 . BTW this site has gone to shit in terms of slowness and add pop ups.

Looks absolutely nuts. But by the engine compartment pic, it's basically a GR Yaris / Corolla entire transverse drivetrain (or even chassis) in a GR86 body.

Yes, every video and ezine say the same thing: "...the GR86 gets a complete powertrain swap by way of the 3-cylinder turbocharged, GR-FOUR AWD drivetrain from the GR Corolla."

Toyota seems to want to throw that engine into every performance car variant they make (GR Yaris, GR Corolla, Morizo edition Lexus LBX, rumored 3rd gen GR86) Kind of like how the 2UR-GSE V8 was in every high performance car that could fit a V8.
