Seriously, I hear the sounds you are referring to. To, me it just sounds like "exhaust sounds". Have you checked to make sure all your car's exhaust system connections are secure ... ?? The exhaust sounds a little "straight pipe-ish", like in the old days (pre 1955). humfrz |

I don't hear anything abnormal. Just a typical cat-back drone

I guess my sound recording sucks. It can really only be heard with headphones on, and a decent volume level. But it's beyond the drone. It's that staccato rattle

I hear what you are talking about. The almost knocking sound. Mine does the exact same thing around the same range. Basically 3000-3600 on mine. I think it's just VVT and/or DI noise. Do you have a tune or have you made any changes to your tune?

I think I hear what you are talking about. Like a really fast snapping or kitkitkit type of noise like the frequency is off a little bit.
I'd agree that it is probably a temperature thing. You are in a unique situation. It could be that the metal is contracting a little and is causing some kind of vibration. When it warms up, you'll know. Maybe just don't romp on it too much until then. |

But what I'm hearing doesn't sound like a precursor to major mechanical malfunction. I and a lot of other people on the forum's have written in response to people with concerns such as yours. If this is your first experience with either the FR-S/86/BRZ, be prepared for a lot more random, concerning noises. Especially in the cold. If you aren't getting too many responses, or nobody can really help you pinpoint it, it may simply be the fact that these cars are sort of janky. You shouldn't get too paranoid about this stuff, so long as the car feels fine, enjoy. Another possible answer is that the engine is supposed to switch from port to DI around 3-4K (I don't think anyone knows for sure). Given the change in fueling method and combustion, it might be that. |

Rod knock is typically heard when the engine load is netral. Not engine braking but also not accelerating. Typically with rod knock it goes away with almost any acceleration/deceleration. My car makes this sound when load is neutral but also with light to medium acceleration. Off throttle it seems to go away. Rod knock also isn't isolated to one RPM band. Rod knock is also heard like mad on a cold start.
It damn sure "sounds" like rod knock to me but all other symptoms you get with rod knock don't show for me. I've smashed plenty of rod bearing over the years so I'm fairly used to how it sounds. On car I've had in the past the knock sensors pick up the rod knock and think it's detonation and retard the timing dramatically. This also isn't happening on my car. Took me months to rest my mind when getting this FRS. This car sounds like garbage IMO. I can overlook just about every flaw about our cars but they just really sound like crap. Hard to get used to after owning so many other cars that sound amazing. |
