Catback volume something between awe and borla type s

I have the 7 year 100k warranty and I don’t foresee myself tuning or adding a uel header to my exhaust or messing with front pipe. I mostly drive highway 75-80mph.

I’ve heard the borla type-s and it seems too tame and would make sense if I was going to pair with uel later.

Awe cold start and overall sound is too loud for my 38yrold taste.

I’m looking for under 3.5rpm part casual throttle a tad louder then stock. 3.5+ rpm half/full throttle louder then stock but not being heard from 1/8 mile away or filling up the cabin with sound. I leave at 4am for work so I can contain some sound in my garage for cold start. No budget just want tone/personality with no to minimal drone.

So I’ve been eyeing map performance exhaust. Anyone else have experience with that company? Other than the tip exhaust clamps are no good.

Any other similar catbacks you have first hand knowledge to recommend? Looking for a one and done.

Thanks

I have done quite a few things in life where the conclusion after a few months was "why the hell did I do that?". May I suggest you learn from my mistakes and leave your muffler alone... Your description sounds like someone who really has no reason to mess with it. A very slightly louder exhaust sound at 4am is not worth the hassle :-)

I'm in the same boat, although I'd pick a 4500 rpm threshold instead.

Personally I'd prefer to keep the cold start tame when I leave to the track / autox at 6am in the morning. Keeping the garage door open for 30 seconds is an option, but not ideal.

I tried the Borla S-Type and liked it overall, but it had a resonance around 2500 rpm that would IMO make it too loud when trying to quietly leave the neighborhood early in the morning. Its cold start is also loud-ish.

I have a friend who has a MAPerformance catback, but his car is on jacks for the next few weeks.
I'm also trying to find someone with a MagnaFlow Street Series Cat-Back Performance Exhaust System 15157, the videos I found on YouTube sound very interesting.

Kevin Vo just got an X-Force VALVED Catback Exhaust that has a remote-controlled valve. It's currently hard to tell how loud it is with the valve open/close, we will need to wait for the full review. I like the concept of having a valve, but I'd be ok with just a wrench-actuated valve if that was cheaper.

You mostly drive at a drone-y, un-fun speed and don't want to be heard nor have the interior of the car filled with sound...

Brother, you want to keep the exhaust stock.

Maybe waste some money on an intake to get some extra noise for your very limited use case desires.

I’m not afraid of annoying my neighbors with sound. I had a full exhaust zx10r for years and wore ear plugs due to noise. I live in a rural area and my neighbor has a full exhaust coyote that is 120-130 decibel on start up except he leaves at 8am. I always idled through neighborhood so does he to be respectful atleast. I essentially gave up motorcycling (25years riding) for my brz purchase.

I saw the valved exhaust but for longevity sakes and usage it may just be another option/issue that may not last. It does look does look appealing to have that two faced personality.

I'm happy to see honesty like this. It's really helpful.

My desires are very similar to the OPs, and driving habits aren't too much different, if not slower from a daily commute standpoint.

I hate the sound of the OEM exhaust, but there doesn't seem to be any good options to improve sound quality, but not increase volume inside or outside the cabin. HKS Legamax Premium might be the closest, but I'm not even sure there.

They have 0 tone and drone a lot like a remark.. Unless you know of a muffler axle back other than a q300 which is essentially just as quiet as a borla type s then please specify.

Works motorsport did have a jeckel & hyde exhaust that used an automatic valve, i think it opened @ like 4500to5k rpm. But that was first gen. Im still in a 1st so havent really researched compatibility from 1st to 2nd for that part.

Q300 is a cat-back. So is the Type S.
Do you even know the difference between a cat-back and an axle-back?

Nameles w/ 5" mufflers. No drone.
Deeper sounding than stock.
Even quieter than those two cat-backs.

I'm 36 and generally like exhausts that have some grunt and good tone, but hate rasp and high volume levels.

I went with the Borla Type-S and haven't looked back. Personally I don't think the Borla is too tame. It's a bit quiet cruising, but when you get on it, it opens up. That's ideal for me - cruising on the highway, I don't want something super loud, but at 4k and up, I do want to hear it.

Borla offers an axleback version, which seems to be more aggressive/louder than the catback Type-S version at cold start, but driving and everywhere else it seems noticeably tamer. If I'd sum up what it added to the car, I'd say it gave a good amount of volume and personality, without a normal person going "wow, that car has a loud exhaust on it". I initially thought it was going to be too tame from the videos I was seeing of it, but it was spot on and loud enough.

Exhausts are hard to compare through video on Youtube. Some videos will make one seem tame and lower volume, another might make it seem more aggressive or louder. It all comes down to the mic and how far away it is from the outlet/tip. Also add in one person's definition of "loud" vs another.

I may just get a borla type s and error on the side of caution plus I want black tips. Did you have an issue with the connecting gasket seating? Where did you pick the right one up if so?

Full disclosure, I do have a leak where the mid-pipe connects to the OEM front pipe. I can't blame Borla though - I blame myself and the polyurethane hangers I bought after I had it installed and sealing 100% correctly.

I had no leaks initially, but the tips were slightly off. One sat higher than the other and my OCD wanted them the same. The Grimmspeed two position hangers did the trick, but the result was it pulled and pushed the exhaust into place at the tips, but the force overcomes the OEM spring bolts at the connection point... thus a small leak.

I'm only doing this in my home garage, so I suspect if I had a shop loosen all the Borla slip joints up, shove the midpipe full forward towards the front pipe, and tighten everything down, it would probably seal fine again.
