This thread makes me want to work my living-soul off this upcoming senior year in hopes of owning a Miata this January (when i turn 18) and eventually get a beautiful FR-S

I have no issue with that. Buying a $25K to $30K car that is technically a relatively decent and tame driver works in the right economic situation. A kid that is determined to do stupid things, can do them in any car. The FR-S to me is no more dangerous than a 15 year old V8 Buick.

This however shows that the ability to make money does not always equate to common sense. I'm sorry but these parents have a death wish for their child. Perhaps not intentionally, but that's what it adds up to. Mostly around the Ferrari. The SR22 is a decent, safe and docile airplane, basically the aviation equivalent to the FR-S. Of course, in my case, my kids would have to fight me for seat time.

The 458 is easier to drive than you think, easy!
You should see this kid fly his dad's Socata TBM 700

Nice cars, or even decent cars for that matter, do not mix with college. Give it a couple semesters and you'll have more dings, scratches, scrapes, and damage from other cars hitting it than you can shake a stick at.

If you insist on buying your kid a car, get him or her a $3000 rust bucket. Upon graduation, your kid can buy his or her own new car.

As for the kids that are 16 bragging about having an FR-S...I would knock that off. Most people will roll their eyes knowing you lack independence, and unless your parents continue to support you, it will be the nicest car you'll own for another decade or two.

Some privileged ass kids here man... when I was 17 I worked my ass off at some dumb restaurant to be able to afford the $1000 rustbucket FC3S down the street from my church. It was white so I could pretend I was Ryosuke from Initial D, ha.
Understand completely. Starting my freshman year in undergrad I was working two jobs, seven days a week and enrolled full time to be able to pay for school, rent, car and insurance.

$300 cars teach you a lot about life and build character!
My first car was a 1995 Dodge Minivan State Farm valued at $595 I believe? The bicycle I bought for college was worth more haha.

I worked my ass to the bone from 16-22, to get into a big corporation.

Now I'm 22, 23 this year with a nice 2013 c350 coupe fully loaded coming in, all expenses on me.

Damn, life is tough, but some have it easy, so I can't complain.

To each their own.

I've offered to let some of my family members drive my car, but the youngest is 20. i wouldn't mind loaning it to a 16 year old, as long as I was in the passenger seat. It's a very tame car to learn on

My concern not be in the day-to-day driving/flying but on the fringes when no one is looking. It's obviously always possible this is an exceptionally skilled kid that could outfly/outdrive all of us on any given day, but in a true emergency situation or given enough peer pressure will he/she make the right decision? Has he/she matured enough to stay calm in those situations and react correctly even though in theory they know how to react? Doubtful. Been there, done that, got the scars to prove it.

The further from the realm of "reasonable" something performs the more it magnifies lapses in judgement and inexperience. The kid will have plenty of opportunities (like all of us) to make decisions that will kill him/her, I just wouldn't want to be have been the one to make the decision to fund it and have to live with it later.

Again, just my opinion. I don't run in the world where that even makes sense financially so who knows what I would think if I did. I believe everyone is (or at least should be) free to make these decisions for themselves.

It's all good as long as no one gets hurt.

I know a few people who fit that average car loan person to a tee. One of my acquaintances got in a car accident and found himself upside down on his car loan and he had to sell off some stuff to make up for it, then he turned around and bought a brand new Optima to replace the totaled car... Many heads were shaken. In my mind any loan beyond 3 years is excessive and 6 is just mind boggling and alien to me.

I admire the both of yous guys hard work( lol yous guys) and discipline

I too come a similar background, worked from 16-21 and have finally landed myself a corporate job. Paying for the car myself, no mommy help.

Its funny seeing all the people I went to highschool with still living with their parents with 'nice' cars. Or the kids who were spoiled then moved out only to move back in with their parents because they racked up so much debt in credit. Im glad my mom never spoiled me, because it taught me if you want something you have to make sacrifices, life is tough, and you gotta work hard!!

I dont plan on spending $475 a month, but considering my car is paid for now. This seriously made me second guess my BRZ.
