Nice, I just bought a Shanghai S179 (gift) and Seagull 819.351. Hey, they're really pretty, they're automatic, and my bank account is dry, what am I supposed to do. I kind of want a skeleton watch so I can stare at the movement while I'm bored, but I don't have money to spare b

It's funny, I used to have a major hard-on for skeleton watches ever since I saw a pic of a Vacheron Constantin skeleton. But consider that that is a 6 figure watch. Lately I've seen so many terribly executed cheap skeletons (Nixon, Invicta, and even worse...) that my opinion has completely reversed. You could go with an Orient Esteem http://orientwatchusa.com/fdb08004b that has an 'open heart' to display the balance. They're pretty reasonably priced on Amazon.

Here's the movement on mine:

It doesn't photograph well but you can see the rotor has Geneva Stripes decoration and the bridge has pearlage decoration.

Edit:

Damn, that Seagull 351 is pretty nice. I've seen some pics of ones with kind of tacky designs. But that one is really classy. Decoration on the movement looks more pronounced than mine, too.

I think that watch looks a little awkward though, I prefer a little more movement exposed. I actually liked the Swatch skeleton automatic I saw in the store, but seeing how I broke 2 Swatches already not going to drop money on another one.

Usually skeletons have basically nothing covering the movement and I think that makes it a little weird from some angles, I don't have any examples but I think it's good when you have enough watch face covered on the outer edge so that there's space for numbers and stuff.

Oh yea I saw my first Sieko 5 up close, unidirectional winding??

I'm not really a fan of open hearts either, but they're a whole lot cheaper than skeleton's. Orient has a full skeleton, but it's $2300! It's their higher grade movement, but that's a lot of money for just sub-seconds with a power reserve.

Edit: And only handwind!

My Seiko 5 was my gateway watch. I didn't know reliable automatics could be that cheap. It's small, light, and keeps so-so time (gains about 2 minutes per week). But the clasp feels flimsy after wearing the Orient's.

All Seiko watches are bidirectional winding. Some Chinese movements copied their system. I've seen them advertised with 'Seiko-style magic lever'.
