I'm glad that I never bothered to have this fixed. I'm at around 10k miles now and I can't remember the last time I heard the crickets. Drive the piss out of your car, track it, AutoX it...betcha they go away like mine did.

I have bit of paranoia about fuel pumps as I had an old VW beetle that had a chirping fuel pump shortly before failing and spewing gas all over the engine. Fortunately the weather and the engine was cold so no fire. A new $30 fuel pump later and it was running fine.
$30 for a HPFP? Sheesh, no wonder they were failing. For what it's worth, my Speed3 has been making a noise almost identical to my BRZ for almost 2 years now and has no issues. It's pretty heavily modified, pushing a ton of boost, and I beat the piss out of it. Fuel pump runs like a champ!

I'm curious how long they're going to keep replacing the pumps with the same pump (and how long people are going to actually have them replace the pump with the same pump, for that matter...) until they make an adjustment.

My new pump took a little over 2 months to get so I'm hoping its an improved one. The crickets were sporadic but annoying.

The $30 fuel pump was on a 74 beetle and not HPFP but an old gear driven pump. Replaced it myself in 10 minutes. Those were the good old days when you could actually work on your car.

+1 I don't even pay attention to it. 10k here too. This is a first year car. It's not going to be perfect. I don't hear it all the time, but when I do, I just suck it up. The car runs fine. Just get a louder exhaust

Just enjoy the car for now and wait a year or two when there should be more permanent fixes (unless it's severe). Plus we all have 3 year, 36k mile warranties.

I've never heard a "Chirp" I've had mine for about a month w/1060miles on it now. Maybe i'm not paying attention. Can someone tell me how they first started noticing it?

QFT. And some of us were smart enough to purchase a slightly longer warranty than that (since this is a first-run car, I fully expect to find issues as we continue down the road).

I think the big ruckus over this is mostly from people's expectations for a new car. Lets face it, i would bet a majority of FR-S owners have never owned a car in its first year of production. Those of us who have, or know those who have, have a lower expectation of initial quality, as the bugs are worked out of a system in its first couple years.

People were generally noticing the chirp initially around ~200 miles. Some were going as long as 300-500 miles. The cold weather may be throwing off some of the chirping, as it only seems to occur when the engine gets warm.

I accept that statement.

Just wondering: How long, according to your intuition or chrystal ball or whatever, do you think it will take to work out the bugs? Two model years? Three? [Serious question. No sarcasm intended.]

Yep. 1st year new model...there's going to be issues. I'll trade up for the hotter version within a year of it coming out anyway.

I just thought I'd add in on this. I bought my car early Dec and I just got my fuel pump replaced along with the exact other pieces posted in a pic a couple pages back.

I was at 1900 miles when I could clearly hear "the chirp". The dealership had the parts on hand, so I really only had to invest 3 hours sitting there.

Its not a crystal ball as much as I pay attention to history

First, new-run models such as ours always have one or two (minor) bugs that are usually worked out in the first year. Some have more than others, and are short-lived as models. These bugs are usually worked out in the first year, with refinement of the model continuing in the second year. Barring any major design changes, a model usually is fairly stable when the third model year comes out.

If you look at a magazine like Consumer Reports, when they do their new car ratings, look at a model that has been out for less than 5 years. The first year they rate, there are a few things off. The next year, those parts have (usually) improved. The year after, they're about the best they are going to get. However, the things that are fixed over time are fixed for all cars, not just the successive model years. All it means is that the third year car doesn't have to be serviced as much, but they all essentially still work the same.

Something interesting happened. Disconnected my battery to hardwire my radar and afterwards the chirping was gone. Came back after 10 minutes though just throwing it out there.

How many miles have you put on after the pump was changed?
