Of course, there is nothing new about the squat mod. Lowriders started off with owners putting sandbags in their trunks in the 50s to create the exact same look.

For that matter, my father was known for overloading the roofing company pick up trucks to the point where the front wheels were barely providing enough traction to steer (and yes that was in North Carolina).

Hmm, so maybe he inadvertently created the look in the 70s without knowing it, and a kid seeing it grew up to create the "official" look.

Well, the “nose high” look came about from necessity. Staring in the late 40’s drag racers learned that to get better traction they had to get more weight over the rear tires. The simplest way was to raise the front end. Usually by taking an “I” beam front and flipping it upside down. Then in the 50’s they started to fabricate custom tube front ends and of course some drag inspired street rods did the same.
The look became more refined throughout the 50’s as lead sleds began the Kool “reverse rake” with the rear bumper barely off the ground.

I wish I still had my 1964 Chevy impala ss. My dad bought it new and gave it to me in the '80s when he didn't want to deal with it. It was like driving a Lazy boy.

Ultimate low rider.

One time in high school my buddy and I went to a Halloween party as low riders. We put all my weights, and a big cooler full of water in the trunk. The rear bumper was an inch off the ground. Luckily we only had about a quarter mile to go to the party. Best costume ever.

Reminds me of back in the day when cars had leaf springs in the rear and we used to insert "lowering blocks" between the axle and springs.

Of course, for those who wanted to go "really low", one could take a torch and heat up the springs till the rear end drug the ground -

I learned to drive in my Dad's 1968 Olds 98 which also fits into the sofa class. It was 224 inches long with a 126 inch wheelbase. In comparison a 2025 Suburban is 226/134 so only slightly longer.

I actually took my driver's test in it, including parallel parking. Good thing I didn't know better!

You want to talk big automobiles? My father had a 1930 V16 Cadillac 7 passenger Town Sedan. IIRC it was 240+ inches overall from front bumper to the back of the trunk when mounted and . I do not have a good photo of it but it would have looked like this image.
Funny story, my father was asked to show his 1934 LaSalle convertible coupe at the 1963 New York Auto Show in a special exhibit called, “Cavalcade of the Car” sponsored by Sports Illustrated magazine. He hired Ron Fawcett to trailer the car down. https://www.fawcettmotors.com/ Ron had just completed building a new, oversized trailer to haul larger cars like his Pierce Arrow. When the day came to load up my dad’s LaSalle the car was too wide and almost too long. They had to undo the fender and lay them against the tires to get the car on. Then they placed rubber floor mats against the edges of the running boards and reattached the fenders but only tightened them until they were pressing against the rubber floors mats.
When my father bought the V16 in Pennsylvania he again hired Ron to pick it up. Ron laughed and replied; sure, I just finished building another new trailer. This one is big enough to carry anything you will ever buy! You see where this is going right? You guessed it; they had to Jerryrig up a way to haul the car home. They got the car up on the trailer as far as it would go. With the front wheels locked down they jacked up the rear of the car off the ramps. Then repositioned, drilled and bolted the ramps to the top side of the trailer. They then lowered the rear tires down on the ramps which now extended out past the end of the trailer.
There is a lot more to this story, like the bizarre way the dealer got this car and why he sold it but I’ll leave that for another time.

This is one of the few cars I regret getting rid. 1991 318is, 5 spd, slicktop. GC coilovers, MarkD chip (not pictured yet Stromung catback and euro trim, euro trim deletes the side markers in the black trim on the bumpers), 17x7.5 SSR Type C (didn't have the stickers on yet).

It was my first "fly and drive home" adventure. A buddy owns a shop up in the Cherry Hill, NJ area. His brother took the train to DC and picked it up, took it back to the shop, refreshed all the brakes and bushings and put in black carpet, uncracked dash, died the headliner black (I had a black leather sport interior with houndstooth door cards to go in.) And then I flew up and drove it back to Tulsa.

If you're interested in more:

I sold it back to the original owner, who sold it again. It ended up as engine swapped track car and then this happened.

I'd LOVE to get another one that was as clean as this one, but I don't have a 3rd garage space or be willing to spend the $15-20k it would take to get a really nice one.

They still do that to some degree for no prep races. They run really long travel front shocks and use the rebound to tune how quickly they extend so they can transfer weight to the rear. Some of those cars will wheelie trying to do a burnout on cold tires while trying to do a burnout on regular pavement or concrete.

I never thought the Impala was that long. Google says it was 210 inches. It was that the front bucket seats were so big and comfy.

I had to look it up, the 1985 Lincoln Town Car I was gifted from my grandma in College in the early 2000s was 219.2 inches long!

Blue, blue vinyl top, all blue leather interior. We drove it from Stillwater to Houston 1 year for a bowl game, couldn't have been a more comfortable ride.

The longest car I ever owned was a 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V.

It was 230" long.

My brother bought it from the original owner. I bought it from him on a whim.

REAL leather interior, it was quite a cruiser -
