The weather finally cleared up and it was a sunny day so took a drive down some windy backroads. Don't think I'll ever get tired of having the windows down, some music playing and some curvy roads.

Installed whiteline roll center correction kit, caster/bump steer correction bushings, front control arm bushings rear position, and every single bushing in the rear suspension along with SPC control arms. I didn't change the rear lower control arm bushings located on the axle support/hub/knuckle as Toyota put a cross axis bushing in that location already. The SPC bushings have cross axis bushings installed at the inner position too. Win!!! I was surprised, a polyurethane bushing would be a downgrade in that location so I left it. For those that don't know, a cross axis bush is like a heim joint but it has seals and is greased. It lasts much longer than a heim because of the grease.

Well it is raining here, I mean really raining. I am not able to go out and really push the car, but wow! The steering is much more responsive. I had previously installed Perrin steering rack lockdowns, but this is way more noticeable than the lock downs. Both front control arm bushings in both arms have been replaced. The forward ones are the Whiteline anti dive/caster correction bushings(KCA434), and they seem to work well. They also increase caster, which in turn has increased the weight required on the steering wheel at turn in. When I previously installed larger wheels and tires, the turn in became lighter. I really wasn't pleased with that at the time. The caster correction seems to have solved that. I also added the roll center correction kit. I cannot accurately quantify which of the two mods helped the front the most, but I can tell you that the sum of the two mods is noticeable improvement. The new bushings in the back really have calmed the rear end down. I can really feel each shock doing its job now. I never felt like my car was bouncy before, but I can really feel that it has way less bounce now. At installation with the rear shock disconnected, the individual arms really articulate smoothly now. With the old stock rubber bushings, they were loaded and lacked range of motion. There was rubber band effect due to the rubber bushings. The polyurethane bushings do not do that. While feeling very connected due to the obscene use of less compliant polyurethane in the rear suspension, it really rides better. The shocks get to do their jobs. There is an intersection in my town that has wicked tire grooves in the cross traffic pavement from heavy truck traffic. My car would kind of stutter and jutter over them when I caught the green light and went through the intersection at 45mph. Today I had a green light and the car stayed firmly connected to the road, and was very compliant. Every aspect of driving is much more instantaneous in regard to suspension. The steering is immediate and responsive, with amazing feedback. The ride is much more planted without harshness. The car doesn't wander at highway speeds now like it used to. It never did it badly- just a little, but now it doesn't do it at all. I am highly satisfied with the results.
I do have two issues with the car now though. I wanted -1.5 camber in the front and -1.25 in the rear. Because of the anti dive/caster correction bushings in the front, I could only get -1.3 camber in the front with the SPC camber bolts. I plan on going with Tein mono flex coil overs as one of my last two suspension upgrades, so the camber plates they come with will solve that. In the rear, the camber can only be adjusted down to -1.4 because there isn't enough adjustment in the elliptical toe arms. If they took it to -1.25 camber, the toe had no adjustment left and became excessive in regard to my wishes. Adjustable toe arms will solve that. I know many of you think that -1.25 is too little negative camber out back, but my car is first and foremost a daily driver. It is supercharged, and high performance 245/40 17 tires don't last that long as is. At -2 degrees in the rear and -1.5 in front like I was running, I am getting considerable long term tire wear on the inside of the tread. I would like to slow that down a bit as $650+ for tires is expensive to me. If I can make them last a bit longer without compromising handling too much- I can live with that compromise. All in all, I am really happy with the upgrades. Forgot to mention that I am lowered on Eibach pro springs. Last edited by twag4; 12-31-2015 at 01:48 PM. |
