nope, you missed the point that some of the mpg fuel mileage estimates, like the v6 mustang, are set at 31mpg highway but the number is unobtainable period...
whereas the FRS/BRZ can easily surpass its mpg estimates...

I'm just saying the estimates aren't always as good as they seem, if ford were more honest their v6 mustang should be advertised as 13 city/25 highway and not 19 city/31 highway because not a single person on the mustang forums has actually gotten those number whereas everyone on here or 90% of us here are getting the estimated mpgs posted by toyota/subaru even with spirited driving...

Sure, weight and tire pressure are the biggest factor when it comes to contact patch size, but all else equal, a wider tire will put down a larger contact patch than a more narrow tire. I did notice that you said "wouldn't really change", so I suspect that you already know that wider tires generally mean wider contact patches.
ill just start off with, i dont really get the whole concept.

that being said, yes ive read that and looked at the data dozens of time. there are a couple things i would like to point out. for starters that is a study on the effects of changing pressure on the same tire and not changing the tire with the same pressure. i dont think it reflects the changes that would happen if the other side of the equation is made the variable (dont know what happens in real life but i think its an important observation). as the tire pressure decreases, the structural integrity of the sidewall becomes a more significant factor so we wouldnt expect to see linear relationships. i would be curious to see what happens when you get a wider tire with the appropriate rim to keep similar sidewall tensions and see what happens.

either way thats probably an article that a forum for a car like this could really use

I'm in Chicago have a 46 mile round trip M-F drive like a maniac and get 28 MPG. Taken numerous 500+ mile road trips and have multiple tank average over 35 mpg on those trips. I honestly am impressed with the mpg I get considering I drive with gusto. My 09 corolla S got 30 around town and 38 highway. I'm almost getting the same mpg as an econo grocery getter but having 3000% more fun driving.

for a toyota sports car, im happy with 30-40... if you drive it like a grandpa u will get 40 -- if u have fun with it its still around 30 plus or minus - i find myself driving alot because of the great mpgs... + its a respectable sports car - slowly becoming one.
this is true! if ya drive it as a conventional point a to point b vehicle, without "thrashing" it,you should see a much better return!

absolutely the truth! makes a world of difference!

My GF has a 2012 328xi and she averages 22-24mpg(mixed) FR-S tells you went to shift and if you follow it you'll average about 27-30mpg (mixed). highest ive hit is 38-39mpg driving like a grandma and lowest was 25mpg and that was me driving like i was in fast in the furious..i'm very impressed with the fuel consumption in this car in a positive way. Someone mentioned the tc couldnt even get that and i owned a tc before this car and they were right! 19mpg-24mpg.
again, sooo true! not high revving,or thrashin' the car makes a big difference!

bonus! for sure!

I personally think the gas mileage on the highway is superb, and that is where everyone is getting great numbers from. From what I've read, the lower numbers are generally coming from people doing more city driving then highway driving.
stop and go "kills" gas mileage!

it does, and the "slush" apparently CAN deliver!

I've been shifting at around 2.5k rpm and keeping it at around 3.2ish rpm on the fwy... I'll try staying in the slow lane and keeping it at 60 and see how that goes.

Until my last road trip I averaged 36 combined miles to the gallon for 4,000 miles. Change your driving habits and the car will reward you.

The first real tank I ran through it produced around 29 mpg. I had to guess on the miles because I didn't set the trip, but even if I was off either direction, it wouldn't change the amount much. All I can say is I'm impressed and pleased. My mazda 626 only averages 24.
