I took the old bugeye out on Saturday for a charity toy drive, and took some photos on my way home (she's super dirty though):

![]() Should be careful on craigslist. Some of the lens and bodies are heavily over priced. I'd recommend Fred Miranda or a brand specific forum (something similar to the canon's brand forum "photography on the net.")

Guys I'm into photography too (not pro, just like to take phots thats it) and I'm going to buy my 1st D-SLR within the next 2 months
yahanyways, what would be the best option for me? I kinda like the new sony alpha77. Should I buy it as my 1st dslr? also will save money for 3 lens what would be best for budget/performance if one for superwide photos, 2nd for taking photos of people/outdoor and last one is for super zoom (something above 250mm?)

Hmm.. Well, when it comes to photography, I've always kept one thing in mind. Good glass before a good body.
Pretty much, you can always replace the camera body, those come and go. However, good lenses are just that, they're good lenses. When you buy a camera body, you're buying into the camera system. So pick your lenses, then pick a body. (that's what I do anyways). So, what do you plan on taking pictures of? Will it be more often "night" or more often bright and sunny? Will you be taking pictures indoors or outdoors? Do you want a "zoom lens" or a "prime" lens, prime lenses are fixed focal length, zooms... well zoom. I lean towards prime lenses, because they often are of much higher quality than a normal zoom lens. However the most important thing about primes is that they have a faster f-stop than their zoom equivalent, so you get more light and a shallower depth of field. Zooms are nice because they can fill many roles at the loss of some quality and speed and one doesn't have to change lenses as often. Now about that Sony alpha77, I know it has a translucent mirror. In SLT cameras, the light goes through the mirror before it hits the sensor. You lose some light there. For someone like me, who shoots in dark conditions, I would like to keep as many photons of light as possible. That's not to say the alpha77 isn't a good camera (Its actually a really good one, handles nicely too) it just might not fit your needs. Oh, and for everything else... I shoot with a Pentax K-5; the DA* 55mm f1.4 and the super-thin DA 40mm f2.8 Limited |

Yep, I definitely agree that glass > body, and that you're buying into a system. Some of my best lenses have been with me for years, but I've gone through 4 camera bodies since then. Generally, I usually advise people to go with either Nikon or Canon based on the sheer number of really exceptional lenses available, but honestly the best camera is going to be what works best for you.
I'm partial to Nikon because I have pretty big hands, thus their ergonomics work better for me, not to mention I prefer how the controls are laid out. That isn't to say that other brands aren't going to be good, just not as good for me personally. You really won't find a gigantic difference in image quality at the entry level, and even at the pro level most people are going to have a hard time distinguishing any image quality differences. Regarding lenses specifically, I usually recommend a wide angle zoom and some sort of normal or short telephoto prime to start. Those are going to be the most usable focal lengths when you first start out, since you'll be able to capture every day things and learn how to compose shots more easily. When I first started out with my Nikon D70, I had a Nikon 18-70mm ƒ3.5-4.5, then I got a Nikon 50mm ƒ1.8, and then eventually a Nikon 70-300mm ƒ4.5-5.6 D. Those were my only three lenses that I owned for well over a year and a half and they worked great enough for multiple magazine features.
