Corporal punishment is legal but it's a thin line nowadays. The purpose is to inflict minor pain to reinforce a lesson, not to cause injury. So it cannot cause bruises or leave marks. I know personally someone who got a week in jail for using a cane pole on his daughter. He was angry and wailed on her so hard there were huge welts on her legs. Her mom didn't want to call the police so my mom did. The judge ruled him guilty after a brief trial. They actually lost all the photographic evidence and were going to throw it out due to lack of evidence until my mom gave them copies again.

My parents used corporal punishment infrequently. The few times were for serious offenses like lying, stealing, etc. They focused more on verbal reprimands and isolation for lesser offenses. I was grounded many times for not finishing homework or not doing chores. I did get more than my fair share of lectures but I remember those few spankings far more.

Older adults tend to say I turned out well. I'm not too sure about that but I know my parents are proud of the way I turned out.

The d word.... that always got me.

My mother raised my brother and me pretty much by herself and I don't know how she managed to do such a good job.

I've never done drugs. I've never had any significant run-ins with the cops. I think I drank a grand total of twice before hitting 21. I could go on...

I put it all down to her being very open and honest and educating us properly. We were not able to watch PG-13 or R rated movies when we were kids. Eventually she did allow this prior to reaching the 'appropriate' age but by then we knew WHY these films were rated in such a way and could deal with the content properly.

Kids these days are too damned entitled.

I got sick of hearing lectures. I knew if I just say.. "I'm sorry I'm stupid" I'd get away with it. Then do it again.

I would think twice if I were to get a beating.

You probably did turn out well and no doubt both your parents and more importantly your environment had a lot to do with it.

I grew up in (at the time) a bad part of the East Bronx, most kids that weren't physically reprimanded just blew their parents off once they hit HS.

Actually, I remember during my freshman year of HS at a parent teacher conference this kid about three people in front of me shouting something like "Mom will you shut up so we can leave, I don't want to hear Mr. L's bullshit anymore". I was jawed, and even more surprised when I saw them promptly leave. I definitely would have been delivered the type of epic slap that comes with a soundtrack and slow-mo for that.

Thinking back, when I was in my sophomore year of HS, my Dad heard I got suspended for smoking behind the baseball bleachers. I fought my old man that day cause I thought I was too old to be hit (which truthfully I probably was... just not in a Jamaican household lol). He laid me out on our 2nd floor steps then enrolled me in boxing two weeks after cause he said I couldn't fight.

I can't stand kids who have no decency of respect for their parents or other adults. In my opinion it's fine to disagree with others, but don't act like childish brat while doing so, since it will just end up hurting their own cause. And I can't stand when some parents don't do anything to correct some of these kids otherwise they just walk all over them.

Its a shame that I've watched so many kids or friends act like fools and some still haven't grown out of that habit. SMH

That stuff broke skin.
Ouch >_<! I'd have tried to steal and hide the swatter lol.

Same here. My military science instructor has a bad habit of turning every discussion into a lecture. I really hate personal lectures, so it's been rough having him for two consecutive semesters. It's so bad at this point that if I somehow fail this semester, God forbid, I'll gladly go to LTC to avoid having class with him next year. Name: sad.gif

Seconded. Never buy a helmet online unless your very familiar with the brand. The last helmet I bought for racing a car had buell written all over it. It was ugly as he'll, but fit and felt good.
