It's a 2012 base w/ 5AT but it's a prior rental so it's already seen 48k miles. Still as close to new as I've ever seen. I think you"ll like it. The 2012+ have the 2.5L instead of the old 2.3L with either a 6MT on the sport and touring or an optional 5AT. The 5AT is standard on the GT. I would have been happier with a 6spd but they're rare as you can understand. I'm always looking for an excuse to do a manual swap on a new car. Except I'm not keeping this forever.

The rear cargo area is massive with the seats down and next to nothing with the seats up. It handles pretty good for such a tall car. Power is average I would say. The manual mode is a godsend, I have been driving every rental car in the area and the Mazda transmissions never disappoint in this regard. It's not a Mazda6 but it's as close as you can get and still have 6 seats. I haven't test fit 4 average sized adults in the back yet but I'm planning on doing that today or tomorrow. It looks like they will fit with some seating arrangement. That was the number one reason we picked it over the 3 or even the 6.

I drove it halfway back from Lexington. Partly on interstate at 70-80mph and partly on some windy backroads. The ride is nice and smooth even on crappy roads but the inputs were still connected, for a people hauler anyway. On grooved roads the steering vibrated a little bit. On gravel road the steering bounced a bit. I wasn't feeling the grooves through the seat so I thought the tires might have been out of alignment or something else, but it drives perfectly straight and the vibration stopped on smooth roads. The engine is eerily quiet though.

I'm thinking about an intake/exhaust, nothing too loud mind you. Plus I'm willing to buy used stuff from the MS3 guys. I'm also looking at the stock MS3 sway bars, which seems like they will work with just the endlinks. Nothing irreversible or too expensive but something to offset the minivan effect.

Great review. We're also looking for a hauler, something that the kids can take a friend each when going out, or something that can swallow large items, but still isn't dead to drive. Sway bar upgrade is a good idea, I'll keep that in mind.
