From my impression more and more DCT transmissions are being phased out in favor of purely automatic versions instead. I'm not sure if that's accurate, but it's a trend I feel like I've been seeing. My friend is a Bimmer fanatic and he seems to think the next generation of their cars will stop using DCTs altogether.

Ya, I've noticed it as well, specially for more "main stream" performance luxury brands like BMW. Although DCTs are technically more efficient (direct coupling) and shift quicker, they are inherently more complex and therefore more susceptible to issue (more points of failure). Regular ATs (torque converted) are technically less efficient (indirect fluid coupling) but drive much smoother for day to day driving and matches well with the trend of going to 7,8 even 9 speeds ((ie every luxury car now). I think DCTs will still stick around on purely performance oriented cars, but I think the fad has passed for all others.

I've never used a DCT before, I'd love to try one out. They seem like a cool concept. I don't think I could ever trade in my clutch pedal though. Seeing 9 gear automatics still blows my mind. I'm starting to feel like an old man.

I've driven my brother's Golf R with the DSG a few times. Really fun slapping the paddles when going on an acceleration run (like going trough the gears when getting on the freeway) or when in the canyons (jumping up and down between 2nd-3rd-4th around corners, etc). Kinda makes it feel like a videogame, which makes for really easy fast driving, almost a little too easy I would say. To me, it is a different kind of "fun", like playing a driving game with a controller vs a steering wheel+pedals+seat: it's doing the same thing and you can have just as much fun, just varying levels of involvement.

My coworker tracked his M2 the other day at Thunderhill. Most of his cars have been manual but this one he got the automatic version. I asked if he used manual mode at all on the track and surprisingly (to me anyway) he said no and just went full automatic the whole day.

Not too surprised, I probably would've done the same knowing that the auto mode is probably much more efficient and faster than me. Plus it's one less thing to worry about and lets you focus on your lines, braking points, etc. instead

Used Optimum Opt-Bond today on the tires, man I see the appeal. I never liked cleaning tires and wheels but the MPSS get brown super quick.

For those that used Gasket Ninja to fix taillight condensation did you order the 3m weatherstrip with it as well?

I need to do something with my tires. They look terrible. Have you used Opt-bond before? How long does it hold up?

Nah first time. Optimum Power Clean + water at a 1:5 ratio. Scrubbed it with with a stiff brush. Wash it off. Did it again but let it sit. Dried the tires. Waited 10 mins, and applied Opti-Bond on the tires. They're still on after a light rain.

It's not super shiny is why I like it, just looks cleaned.
