When we put an addition on our house in about 1975 we put in ceiling heat. Sheetrock with heating coils in it. Then, we never used it because it used an insane amount of electricity.

Yeah. That's pretty efficient. The heated concrete slab is insulated from the sub-floor. Learned a bit about that last week. Can also be combined with solar and/or heat pump for the water.

His is electric, not water, but now that I think about it, it may been radiant ceiling heat not the floor. I "helped" him build the house when I stayed with my Grandparents on their farm back in middle school so it would have been almost 50 years ago now.

Yea, the more I think about it the more I remember it was ceiling heat.

Radiant ceiling heat is about the least efficient way of warming an area you can get. You have to use a pile of energy to end up with a really nice warm layer of air over everybody's head and nothing down at their feet where it is needed.

Yea, I can't say it ever made much sense to me either. For some reason in his house it seemed to work OK though. Then again, his meter may have been spinning at Warp 5 for all I knew

Got a new valve down in Or. and didn't pay any sales tax on it. There! mr. smarmy plumber.


I've had good results getting lacquer out of the jets with a bit of Seafoam in the first couple tanks of a season for small engines.
I've had an Echo string trimmer for over 20 years that's still working fine.
Was going to rebuild the carb for the first time last year, but found that a new carb was only $12 so went with that instead.
I keep Marine Stabil in the gas cans too.

yeah, thanks to china, the rebuild kit is $8 +a case of beer + a full saturday playing with tiny little gaskets, or the entire new carb is $12.
usually change the spark plug as well, normally it's about due to change once the carb starts fouling up... at least that's what i've done the last couple garage finds...

lol, i've carried a knife with me every day since 4th grade.

but that sounds like 2 of the last 2 new hires we had. the first daysliterally involved a lesson on turning a screwdriver. but talk to them about comic books, and they'll have more than 8 hours of material to discuss...

My dad had a friend who had a house in Maine. It was a summer home that they used in the summer and rented it out in the winter. One month they got an electric bill for $8,000 and they were very upset. They called the electric company to dispute it and after some going in circles, someone asked "Do you have a heated driveway?" The were sure they didn't yet sure enough, they finally discovered what the switch to nothing by the front door controls.

Bay area, South bay to be exact. A bit North of where you were. Not central valley.

Most West San Jose schools when I was growing up there were built in the 1960's.

I'm sure you remember the area? A mile this way from my house and you were in Los Gatos, a bit the other way you were in Campbell. A couple miles east and you were in a violent county.
