Freshly 55, freshly retired from teaching public school orchestra and band, and loving it. Enjoyed the students very much, but frustrated by ignorant and/or incompetent administrators and state bureaucracy to the point where the job was torture the last five years. Full time classical and jazz musician prior to teaching, and maintained a part-time career during the 31 years of teaching. Looking forward to going back to playing full-time again very much!

I don't know if anyone here is into big band music, a la Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Maynard's early stuff, etc., but here's a link to a CD I'm on from a few years back; I play piano on this one. It's mostly NYC-area players, and, if I do say so myself, it's a GREAT Christmas album; it got glowing reviews from some noted critics and musicians, but never really took off. My father, a NYC trombonist who was on the Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, and other bands back in the 60s, wrote all the music and directed the band. He still plays wonderfully, writes and practices daily, and rehearses small groups and his big band and he's in his 80s now. Amazing fellow. He'd be ecstatic to see sales of this CD go up.. in case anyone wants to give themselves, loved ones, AND my dad a great Christmas gift this year. No pressure..

Here's the CDbaby link. You can get it on Amazon, too, but they take a much larger cut of the proceeds...

Best to all..

Barry

OK.. I'll say it first.. I have HATED almost every example of rap/hip-hop I've ever heard. I miss things like.. say.. melody.. harmonic structure.. you know.. the stuff that makes up music? HOWEVER.. this was a BLAST. Someone took a lot of time making that, it fits Carlin to a T, and grooved hard. It's my favorite rap tune, ever. Thanks!

Hi Barry,

Glad you enjoyed the Carlin piece and happy belated birthday!

I like music very much and my wife and I attended a fantastic Glenn Miller Orchestra concert in Santa Rosa last March. I also have a large collection of Boogie Woogie, etc. and at one time (for fun) played upright bass and archtop guitar with a swing band, yada.

I have an extensive music background and at seven and three quarters (7 3/4) years of age was sent to a conservatory of classical music for advanced piano studies.

I play most brass, percussion, and string instruments, but have only learned to play one woodwind (bamboo flute).

I have one instrument remaining on my ‘learn to play this instrument’ bucket list and it is a bassoon.

The last instrument I studied was cello and if I get the urge, have several guitars and a keyboard within reach, here, in my computer room.

Music is a ‘grounding thing’ for me (like working on my vehicles) and I still practice everyday for one (1) to four (4) hours, when I am able, because I enjoy doing it.

Regarding education: I liked research better than teaching and when I worked in an university environment, was only required to teach one class a week. My wife is a tenured teacher with one year before retirement.

Since you were fond of the Carlin mashup , allow me try one more; a mashup involving the band Korn.

The original song is titled, “Coming Undone” ...and your ears should not bleed.

Thank you for the kudos,

on and enjoy your retirement, cwpbrz-ji

Now if only I could find a guy that liked to dance.

29, CPA.

I've been working for a tax planning law firm for a few years and worked for another law firm before that. I've promised myself I won't work for another attorney or encourage any friends and family to follow that path... lol
