Nothing fancy, though. 303 and 304 SS, 6061-T6 (and shitty mystery alloy) aluminum, 1018 mild steel and 12L14 free-machining (useless for automotive stuff) steel.

Plus I'm a grunt and our new management won't let us purchase through the company and even if they did it's usually 20 foot min lengths. One of our old suppliers is Samuel which has good selection of 321 SS but I've got to deal with them privately now since new management doesn't use them anymore.

Thing with titanium is I talked to a few places locally that say on their sites that they can get it, but talking to them in person no-one has any idea about it, and one just said they would order through Onlinemetals or Titanium.com and charge me more, so I should just do it myself.

Main issue is I don't want to be buying a 20 foot minimum length of the stuff, so even at more $/ft, if I can just by 8' from Onlinemetals (or any other no minimum place, like where I got my 4130 and 4140 chrome-moly), it's a lot less money for me up front.

What I want is a test piece so I can find a place that can bend it (else my buddy the welder would be doing pie-cuts, and I won't be able to pay him in beer for that), because I think the same issue will show up with the bending places. A couple say that they can bend titanium accurately on their sites, but how much experience do they really have with it?

Soooo, my predicament now is:

If I go to UIUC, then I'll buy a car. But if I go to MIT, then I won't get one (Driving in Boston would be impossibru)

But my brother is enticing me to get an older STi as a "beater" because I am not very experienced with snow driving (I've lived in Texas, what can I say?), and to get a BRZ later.

I feel like I could more than manage with the BRZ (and I am not a reckless driver by any means) but I'm not entirely sure. Also, I dont know of I should put a deposit down now or just do it when I find out about MIT (decision should be mid march).


Maybe I should just chill and see where the winds of fate take me...

If you go to MIT, you should get a beater. Boston can be cruel to cars. a '98-00 CRV you can get in good condition for under 5 grand & will handle all the potholes and tight streets fine.

can't ride a bike on most sidewalks in boston, & it's dangerous to ride it on the street. Cambridge it would be fine though.

Plenty of people do it and Cambridge is much easier to get around than most. I would say skip the car and stick with buses, trains, or a bike. You'll be saving money and if someone on campus has car just get some rides with them. I know most kids do this over there. But whatever you do Guff, don't be one of those people who ride scooters.

lol, I remember going to Cambridge last year in February, and I noticed a lot of giant blocks of ice on the street with the odd part of a wheel or handlebar sticking out.
