And that's totally fine. I respect this opinion.

There really isn't a need to act elitist over something as mundane as accelerating up a hill.

The people who can do it without the handbrake ARE the elite.

Sorry @Tcoat, but you're wrong. You can drive however you like of course, but the correct way to start moving up a hill so steep that it has been necessary to apply the parking brake in the first place, is:
Apply the right amount of gas, then smoothly disengage parking brake and release clutch at the same time.

It requires some practice to get it just right, but when you do you get a nice forward acceleration with no backwards movement at all, and no clutch wear. At any incline.
This is especially important on ice and snow, and especially when driving heavy trucks. You want forward momentum building up as smoothly as possible, and the parking brake is essential for that.
You seem to be talking about starting in a hill from being parked there (I.e park my car in hill, set handbrake, go to store come back and use your technique) that is literally the only time I could see it being useful.

Other than that, if coming to stop in a steep hill because of a red light, a stop sign, a deer, etc. there is literally no use in using the handbrake. If you choose to use it fine, that's your choice but don't go around saying that this is what everybody should be doing because it's the right way to do it because it isn't. As others have said, it's a fairly new technique recommendation and big rig drivers will laugh at you if you tell them it's the only right way.

I agree with @Tcoat, if you don't have the skill/ability to ease off the brake and give it gas before you back up you should be driving an automatic

Secondly there is no time when you will have somebody closer behind you than military convoy driving. Not to mention the vehicles are usually crammed with people or things that go bang.
Not you T coat, we are on the same side this time. It seems Venturall hasn't been seen his boyfriend in a while and he feels he needs to take out his frustration on us lower life forms who approximately twice a year have to start on a hill they deem "too steep" to properly start on. Say, how many hours a day do you think I should practice for that 1 start I may or may not face 7 months from now?

yes im just yanking your chains also. Although I completely disagree with the handbrake way is the good way statement, whichever is more suitable/comfortable is the one you should use.

I know its a fringe case, but both my old FRS and new BRZ have had 6-puck clutches and they will absolutely embarrass the driver on a hill start. There is no way short of launching the car to get it to get moving easily on a steep-ish hill and as such, I use the e-brake. Now, 95% of the time, I do it the normal way, but I can't say that there is never a time where the e-brake is necessitated.

But as far as OP's question goes, you should be able to handle just moving off with the clutch in most cases. Especially with the very forgiving stock clutch.
ok but you are the one percent, also 6 pucks aren't considered very useful or good for daily driving (they make life hell like you stated) but for people here who don't have the force of the hulk in their clutch assembly, the handbrake is not a necessity.

Can I get a written note? I just signed up for a driving class so I wouldn't have to trade for an auto. I don't think they'll take my word that you said it's ok

I feel like the opposite has been happening lately.

Ashikabi, as much as I agree that Ventura is acting too much of an ass about a mundane topic, there is really no need to go there.
