Oh ok...well, me thinks that the marketing and promotion guys did an awesome job then. thank fuck that the accountants and researchers had to step in and say: "hello, this is no longer "affordable fun car" anymore". Look at the average disposable income in Australia, paterns in car spendings, average household income, etc.

For that money you can get a better car and you know it.
I love the 86 but i think many people here make this car a bit more than it is.

But still expensive considering how much the yanks pay for the same cars compared to here.
yes but our price is pretty similar to what Japan pays, spec to spec.

TMCA ripping us off because 1. they can 2. others can afford to be ripped off 3. they get away with it.

I can bet my house that if Nissan or Hyundai would have released the new version of Sylvia and Genesis at a MUCH cheaper price, at the same time, Toyota would've...drum roll...dropped their price to be competitive. If Nissan or Hyundai would have asked 29k for the top model then we would've paid similar prices as the yanks!

It is all in the number of sales they can make at a given price.

Huh?

US market huge compared to Aust, they buy many times over we do. Our 86 is well specd in camparison. My celica 11.5 years ago was an overpriced 51K RRP onroad, although I didn't pay anywhere near that. And like I said to the dealer, if the 86 was 45K + onroads then I would not have ordered it. And imho, all of todays Audis are boring except the R8.

So, what is your point? A car price is made out of a big number of variables. You will probably find that the bottom line for Aus and Japan factor weight is very similar.

Personal taste mate! Well, if todays Audi's are boring, try the 80's and 90's...nothing spectacular believe me. And not all of the newere Audis' are nice either, but that is the case with every car manufacturer. But hey, if you expect to see a Veilside type body on a sedan/coupe Audi, just so it is not boring, then Audis' are not your cup of tea.

my point is, we are usually paying higher than Japan for the same car. eg. Mx5, 370Z etc.

imo, Toyota has done reasonably good for the 86.

What new car can you get for $39K driveaway that is better than the GTS in Oz?

I was fully expecting toyota to bring it out with a driveaway price more than the current WRX, was really shocked when it came in under $40K driveaway so I placed my order.

Would i expect Toyota to have dropped their price if the veloster/veloster turbo significantly undercut them? No.. because i dont want to buy a hyundai sports car.

You find me a RWD sports car for the same money or cheaper and tell me why this is over priced.. Hell an entry level Taxi-Spec Commodore or Falcon is the same price as the GT and SV6/XR6 is about the same as the GTS..

Ok, so in YOUR opinion what better car can you get for under 50k ?

I've had my 86 for 4 weeks... I have been waiting years for it and its F*cken awesome.

Guess, some of us make it sound better than it really is ...

It's crap, don't buy it.

Read this first:
"I can bet my house that if Nissan or Hyundai would have released the new version of Sylvia and Genesis at a MUCH cheaper price, at the same time, Toyota would've...drum roll...dropped their price to be competitive. Both cars are rear wheel drive with more power than GTS. Dont get me wrong I absolutely love the GTS but I still believe is over priced. My arguement was:
1. this car is priced differently in different country right? gooood
2. yanks are paying much much less than us, right? about 10 k than gt base model. goood
3. The production costs are the same, for Au as well as US, right? Nothing different whatsoever.

If a rear wheel drive car was to be released at the same time with a much lower price tag, TMCA would've reconsidered their price.
Funny how reading through this post and much older posts people were complainig about Australia being ripped off and now is not true! WTF???
