Failure After J02 Recall - Discussion Threads

Noob question, but after i had my recall done. Car is rough on cold start ups, and i have a knocking noise when warm after highway speeds but goes away when i start driving again. My friend says it sounds like a timing chain issue. Are the timing chains removed when doing this job? Also had my headgaskets replaced while i was getting the valve springs done. Is it a possibility my timing may be off? I’m also throwing a code p0016

Yes, the chains are removed for this recall.

They would for sure be removed for headgasket R&R.

Sounds like you need to bring it back to the dealer and let them look it over.

Is what something you should tell them? "You just worked on my car and now it's knocking and has a check engine light"? Yes, I would tell them that. They know what work was done.

I wouldn't start off with "someone on the internet said it's the timing chain".

Yes, just relate the symptoms and ask them to "fix" it.

Why did they replace your head gaskets? That isn’t part of the recall and adds a significant amount of labor. Did you pay them to do this?

P0016 could be one of a million things. Bad OCV, contamination in the gears, bad cam angle sensor or bad ECU. There have been a bunch of people having damaged OCVs after the recall. It’s probably that.

Dealership recommended it be done while the motor was apart. I ended up paying just for parts to have it done.

There is literally no reason to replace the head gaskets unless they are leaking. They totally pulled one over on you. Replacing the head gaskets means pulling the heads which significantly complicates the job because it involves significantly more work on packing seal. FYI the $240 gasket kit that they use on this recall includes head gaskets so they also pulled one over on you by charging for the parts. There is a significant amount of labor on that job so if they didn't charge you for the labor then most likely they didn't actually replace them which is actually a good thing.

What did they change for the parts?

I think it was parts and a couple hours labor. I ended paying 440 for everything but that’s only because soa gave me 500 coupon. The tech did state that he saw oil leaking when they pulled the motor apart

Which dealership was this at? I want to make sure I never go there for service.

We're beginning to lose focus, this is a registry thread, not an experience thread. One of those has been created and I really ask for your help to keep this one clean as I suspect a lot of us will be referencing it. Maybe create a new thread titled: "Failure After J02 Recall: Discussion Thread" and then link to it in your OP. Maybe also instruct people to link back to their post in the registry thread when starting a discussion in the discussion thread so people can easily reference their report. Maybe a mod could move the posts with discussion into this new thread. Also maybe a thread named "J02 Recall Success: Registry Thread" would be helpful. Seems more people are reporting failure than success but maybe we could get a better idea if there was a registry for that.
