Due to the chain rotation it would delay the cam causing the valve to open later on the exhaust stroke but I do not believe their is a clearance issue developed from this. Very Very lucky it didn't shoot a rocker arm out.

If I was renting/leasing that would make sense...

Update 3/8/2016.

On 3/4/2016, the parts arrived at the dealer.

On the morning 3/7/2016, the service advisor called me and told me the techs were working on putting the car back together and that I should be able to pick the car up in the afternoon. I received no call later in the day, and when I called them, the service advisor had gone home. I asked to check the status and the woman on the phone informed me that the status of my car still said that they were diagnosing the noise.

This morning, 3/8/2016, my service advisor left a voicemail saying they got the car back together, test drove it, and there is still a knock. He said they would speak to Toyota HQ for what they want to do next. At 5:00pm, I called my service advisor and he said they had still not heard from Toyota and they aren't doing anything until they do.

Does anyone have any experience/tips with dealing with the lemon law? The car has been at the dealership for exactly 37 days.

Update 3/10/2016 - Resolved!(?)

Yesterday, I got a call from the service director at the dealership saying they've spoken with Toyota reps about what to do with the car. He said they replaced more parts and got the car running normally with no noises at all. He took a final 30 minute long test drive this morning and called me to come pick up the car.

I drove the car about 2 hours today and happy to say, there is no noise whatsoever. Even the crickets are gone because they also changed the fuel pump. (I believe the noise they were hearing after changing the cam gear was the crickets.)

Here's a list of everything replaced on the car. If it says QTY 0, it's because they were instructed to pull parts off a new 2015 FRS by Toyota reps rather than making me wait for part orders. At least that's my understanding from what the service director told me. So a fuel pump and "injector sub assembly" from the donor car.

Update 9/21/2016 - Knocking came back while driving normally to lunch today.

Called up the service manager at the dealer that handled the car the first time. Brought the car in and he and one mechanic listened to the car and confirmed it sounds the same as 6 months ago. They're going to get Toyota involved again. Last time, Toyota recommended they take a new car and start swapping parts over to mine until everything was resolved. Hopefully this time they just give me a new engine.

Why not give you new car and problem solved, they are wasting time/money at the end

You don't even need to read the entire thing, just make an effort to skim it.

This will not come anywhere close to solving his problem
