Update FLASCH:
I got my car back last wednesday. Only an ECU flash. Seems to have fixed the problem. The idle isn't perfect, but it's close.

I brought my car yesterday to get the Crickets fixed. Those parts will be here in 5-7 days. They say it's fine to drive till then.

Just got off the phone with Scion of America. In total, my car was in the shop for 3 weeks. I am getting a month's payment paid for, and a 8 year or 125K mile Toyota Platinum warranty. I think it's fair so I'm happy with that.

What is the VIN range for the crickets? (I was struggling to find a proper way to describe it to my dealership, this is perfect!)

The manufacturer quotes in the article above are a blatant denial that this is a larger issue affecting more cars.

"The condition is brought on by a combination of normal mechanical variables"

To me, this says right there this is a mechanical design/defect issue and the ecu flash is a bandaid repair.

"Dealers now have the reflash to correct the issue."

Explain this to the owners still having the CEL issue after a reflash/new ecu/

"The condition causes no damage to the engine and a TSB is in-process."

This means they want you to keep driving your car even with a CEL. Sure it may leave you stranded somewhere, run like crap or stall at a bad time, but hey it's safe so don't worry!

Your situation is actually a new problem. It's the first time I have see the fault jump from one cam gear (P0019 drivers side exhaust) to a different one (P0017 drivers side intake) in this thread. I think they will try to replace the 2nd cam gear. If that fails you should ask for driver's side head to be replaced, the entire engine to be replaced or you should Lemon Law the car and get a new one.

I would really love to know what they actually are fixing//changing in the flash compared to the "old" software? Which commandline are they playing around with?

But the "a TSB is in-process" does sound that this is just a waiting game right now untill it's official.

Do you have the invoice? Is there a part number/work order number for the re-flash?

Maybe they just reset the CEL?

Update: I went by the dealership this afternoon around 2:30 PM and the part has not arrived. They have no tracking number and no clue other than the part was supposed to be there no later than today. It is just UNBELIEVABLE that they have this little information. I asked them to order an ECU a month ago, but they didn't as I am just another dumb customer intefering with their repair process. I called Scion at least 8 times and each time I got disconnected after telling me to hold for another representative. I waited an hour and then called and got to another rep, not Clayton. I was informed part was shipping from Japan and they don't know when but it should be to the dealer by Friday. My anger is now centered around the fact that I never get correct information. Car will be ready this date, then this date, then this date, etc. I plan my life and work and kids around getting to the dealer that day (more than 30 min drive each way) all for nothing. Only to see the service guys tell me another reason the car isn't ready.

Yeah I know what that feels like. I kept pressing my service advisor for a hard date that my car would be ready by. Fortunately for me, she came through on her word, but if I were you, I'd ask Scion for compensation for all the trouble they put you through.

This is actually what happened to my car before I talked them into just giving me a replacement car. This was about five weeks ago. They replaced one cam gear, just to have the problem move over to the other, which they were just replacing when I said I'd really had enough. I did see my "old" FR-S out on the lot for sale again last week, so perhaps they've now fixed it. It had been ten days when I asked for the replacement.

If indeed this is just a software flash fix I cannot see how some are affected and others are not since the old (bad) software should be exactly the same on all cars. The only thing I can think is that the engine tolerances are slightly different in each car so some trigger the fault and some do not. Having said that, I am no mechanic, just a logical thinker
