For our small dogs we have special doggy car seats that go over the rear seat head rests. They're held in place (about half way up the seat back) by the the rear shoulder/lap belts. We fit the dogs with harnesses that have a clip in the middle of the back for a leash and a clip on the breast plate for these seats. Because the seat is up high the dogs can see out. The dogs don't feel constrained as there is enough strap to allow them to move around in the seat but, not so much as to allow them to get out.
We've had these seats for 15+ years. Sorry, I don't know what brand they are or where we bought them. They look similar to this one from Pet Valu: |

I'm new here and I haven't introduced you to my Silken Windhound "Velvet". Here's a couple of photos. She's 10-1/2 years old and is amazingly thin considering she doesn't really do anything except lounge around all day.

Prior to my current dog Velvet, I had a Basset Hound named Jelly. Here's the last photo I got of her before she lost her battle with cancer.

Road trip this past weekend with my son's Australian Shephard taking him back to them in FL after visiting us a week while their A/C was out.
Had to "turn off" the airbag by isolating the seat because she would not sit in the back without struggling. First photo is how she spent 50% of the 4 hour trip, on point watching whats going on. Other 50% was spent sleeping curled up in the seat. Second photo was the "are we there yet?" look I would get every 30 minutes or so.

This is Bruno. Looks kinda like a lab. But no. According to his DNA report, he's 60ish% GSD, 30ish% pit bull, and maybe 2ish% boxer. Rescued at eight weeks. Three years old now.
