Hello everyone! My name is Glenn and I just purchased a Dark Grey Metalic, manual Subaru BRZ. I waited a long time to research and ponder purchasing this vehicle and I am glad I finally did when I arrived home from my deployment. I live in Tucson and the very first thing I did was take it up Mt Lemmon.

The first simple mod I would like to put on my car is the Perrin oil cooler (http://blog.perrinperformance.com/pe...-s-oil-cooler/). Has anyone else done or thought of using that product? I am interested in what else I can do to help the engine run better in this 100+ degree weather.

I see everyone is in Vegas, enjoying their time. I hope to maybe meet up with fellow enthusiasts.

I haven't had any issues with the car overheating, in stock form. Even at the track the car stays surprisingly cool. An oil cooler is a good, and necessary, supporting mod for other major increases in power, but for the money, tires would be a better first mod.

A agree with red leader the best bet is to start with tires. If you want an oil cooler get the mocal sandwich plate for $150 and get a regular cooler normally under $100 it will work just as well for a lot cheaper. You will have to get your lines made but any local hydrulics place will make them for cheap.

Welcome, how is the drive up Mt. Lemmon? Looks great on 'paper'.

I am basing buying the oil cooling kit off of this blog: http://blog.perrinperformance.com/pe...-s-oil-cooler/
Since we live in the desert, I figured our oil temperatures would run a little hotter and it would not hurt to have it on there. I think it is a simple install but quite steep for the price.

Mt Lemmon is a lot of fun if you go early in the morning or at night. The problem with early in the morning is all of the cyclists riding up or down the mountain. It is a two lane road and can get congested easily with slower cars. Most of the drivers do not have the SA that they have 5-6 cars behind them so you have to get their attention some how. I have seen 1 cop up there and I do not know anyone who has gotten a speeding ticket.
The temperature difference is at least 10-15 degrees and they have a pretty cool little town up there. The restaurant closes at 8pm as I found out the other night. On the way down, I was pretty much in 4th the whole time and every so often 5th. It is a pretty easy drive and the corners are fun. I experimented with the VSC and traction modes but I did not think it made too much of a difference. I feel like I could have easily gone 10mph faster and been alright but seeing as the was my first drive up there, I took it easy.

What would you all suggest for some other good drives? I was thinking the route to Sonoita for some wine tasting, highway 89 to Sedona (more wine) then Flagstaff for the night.

Hey Glenn.. welcome.
Glad you're enjoying the car and Lemmon.

I also like Kitt Peak but it's over too quick in just 15-20 minutes. Anyway it's a quicker trip door-to-door. Mt Graham is much spicier/more technical and is my favorite. Well worth the highway approach and there's more great roads in the area.

The "best" drive in the state IMO is hwy 191 the 'Devils Highway' from Morenci to Pinetop.

cheers

Yes, our oil temps will be higher than other locales, but unless you are really pushing the car for an extended time, or running forced induction, the oil temps aren't going to be a limiting factor. Tires are really the best, most cost effective mod you can do. Cooling is important, more so down here, but not a first priority. Trust me, I made the mistake of not getting tires first and now it's holding me back.

As for drives, my graham is a lot of fun, so is Kitt peak. Mt Lemmon is really a spoiling drive, since its so close and fairly smooth/clear. Traffic is actually quite minimal, the bikers are merely troublesome if the car in front of you won't pass them. There really aren't any other roads nearby like it.

Hi Glen - Welcome to the group and thanks for serving our country.
Engine oil breaks down at a particular temperature. Synthetic oils break down at a higher temp I believe. I probably wouldn't buy an oil cooler unless I had an oil temp gauge and from it had determined that my oil was in or near the danger zone temp wise. I'd switch to Mobil one or some other top quality synthetic but not until after the break in. I've heard that they lubricate so well they can delay or inhibit a proper break in. Bottom line for me would be that If I don't know what my oil temp is, I don't know if I need a cooler. If it turns out I don't need it, you're just adding weight. Hope that helps.

+1 (John is a long term racing gear head, so he knows his stuff) . If you are staying with stock wheels, tires first. If buying bigger wheels, then wheels and tires. Also, what is your build goal? Autox, road racing, drifting, or show?

Btw, welcome.

I've never been in the area of Mt Graham. I just looked at at on Google maps. I assume you are talking about hwy 388 from the swift trail junction? Is it all paved?

I've decided to make my car a weekend warrior drift and show car. That being said, does anyone know where to do some drift classes?
