Plus about another $8k to $10k in incidentals, tools, equipment etc and you will have a very nice $25 to $30K car with a resale value of about $8k. Now I know you are not looking to flip it but you would get taken to the cleaners if you went to ever sell it.

Also not convinced that the guy that wrote the ad for the car has any concept of what "good" condition is.

anyways,

besides the interview I had with the threatening boss, I had another one earlier in the day for the same position at a German service shop. I just got a call that I got the job. So we're working out a start date because I'd like to give some notice to my current company, even though they were going to fire me. Better pay with benefits (finally) vacations, retirement the whole deal. I'm super excited to start

At the same time I am not sure how much I'll be on here.. with this new job.

Will keep my off-topic family updated

edit: OH! Forgot to mention.. I only live 15 minutes from this place too!

Congrats!

That's assuming I wanted to put it together myself though. I have a plan. My dad has a backyard mechanic that does good work for cash and budweiser. I don't know if he could set anything up properly, but I bet he could install it all. Then it goes to a shop for the finishing touches. I bet that would knock that 8-10 down to 4-5. But you're right, it would be expensive regardless and have virtually no resale.

You will need to pretty much rip the car to the shell and start over. First off it is 30 years old. You are not going to drop an engine in and be done. All the lines will need replacing, fuel tank, rad and every rubber bushing in the thing will need to be replaced.
None of the wiring is going to work with that engine and you will need to reharness everything to get it to even basically run much less give you any gauges or other needed items.
Next that is a car designed for 150 hp and even less torque, all provided through a radial engine. The first time you opened up that 8 you will have a pretzel shaped body. I would not be optimistic that there is much solid floor or unibody left by the looks of the rust in the pictures so that will have to be braced up or completely replaced AND braced up. You will need to completely replace the suspension, brakes (you will die if you tried to stop it with the stock brakes and that much power) and probably most of the steering to deal with the HP increase. The dif will also need to be replaced and a custom driveshaft made.

Like I said I am not trying to stifle your creativity but am convinced that you don't know what you would be getting into. The $8 to $10 I said was optimistic and did not include anything like interior or paint. That is a guess at just getting a road worthy and street drivable car! This is a project for a fully equipped shop and even then it would probably take a year or two to finish (if it ever got finished since these projects have a tendency of being abandoned) not for a dude that works for cash and beer.

Haha it's all good man. I get that you're just trying to help. This isn't an idea I'd attempt, especially not in my current position. Maybe if I had time, money and a good car on the side.

That being said! Allow me to indulge a bit more.

The stuff I left in bold. I selected a turn key engine specifically so I'd have everything new I'd need. All the lines and the wiring harness I'd need come with it. So that's at least a little less headache.

And that was the first RX7 I found. I could potentially find a better one. That also being said, none of my calculations included suspension and support, but I knew it was a edge pushing cost. Paint and finish could come later, though. So I wouldn't worry about that right away.

If it's a common swap engine in that chassis then someone already built a turn key kit for it. Should be relatively painless to swap

I have the general pieces in that post. A full on kit for the whole thing might exist, but I suspect something like that would be incredibly rare. My puzzle approach with Tcoat's cautious apprehension are the easiest way to do it.
