Plus, anything causing issues here would end up in the sump or oil filter, not cam controllers. If this wasn't the case, far more catastrophic failures would be occurring - connecting rod bearing clearance is 0.025 to 0.055mm (0.00098 to 0.00217in for those not using SI units). |

It's the only reasonable explanation but it's not the timing cover. The problem is in the head or the cam shaft itself.

Here's the FB post - I sure hope this is not true:
" Got some more info today... Looks like the fix is not going to be a simple reflash, or cam gear issue. These were attempts to fix a bigger issue. The reason the cam gear is not in the correct position is because it is controlled by oil pressure. The casting of the heads is the real cause I'm being told. I have had oil control valves swapped, cam sensors swapped, ecu swapped and problem sill exists. The BRZ they have been swapping parts from has not had the cam related codes pop at all... Even when my "faulty parts" were installed on it to see if it was a non mechanical part. Looks like this is going to be a real major issue which is why there is no simple "fix". |

Gave a call, and was told sometime this week before I asked the question to confirm next weeks eta. Will get another update later today.
I am on Week 2 waiting for ECU swap.

Root Cause
Non-Newtonian fluids do weird things when you put them into spinning metal cylinders.

Guys....this is NOT a mechanical issue. Trust me...DO NOT let your dealers take the engine apart and cause more problems. There is a ECM Reflash coming, once it is approved by the EPA & CARB all the dealers will have it available to do.

Unless you're talking about another one after the reflash they're doing now, they're already doing it...and we're seeing mixed results.

More comments from the same post on that Facebook post
I'm told the oil pressure is off due to improper castings of the heads. The oil journals are not flowing properly to keep correct oil pressure on the cam adjustment at idle. The improper oil pressure is keeping the cam from rotating back to home position. I would not start bringing it up with the dealership at this point but I'm fairly confident in my source of info. My source says its not a mechanical issue, or electronic but a casting issue within the heads. |

Going Facebook was a mistake. Now we have info moving around and not necessarily covered in both places.

As of today i'm seeing strange idle behavior when going to a stop. But nothing as severe as it was before with the CEL on. ![]() And is this the same Reflash that some people already have got? And there are still failures even with new software. |
