CEL and SL light came on on day 28 after I purchased the car, limp mode. Have been driving her in limp mode for the last 2 days, scheduled to take her in to the dealership tomorrow. Silly service advisor kept on saying "I bet its your fuel door cap" and I said "no.. please arrange to have a courtersy car for me"
It drives me effing bonkers when I not only have to deal with somebody who isn't as smart as I am, but also insists they know what's up.

Point to the appropriate TSB and tell your idiot service advisor that the heads up play here is to get any needed parts on order now, and to bring the TSB to the attention of their most senior tech so that he or she can prepare.

I swear, nobody in this business does a bloody thing proactively. This isn't how you solve problems.

AutoNews has made contact with Toyota

This was the reply from them

Chris,
I am in communication with Toyota. They say there is a fix. Getting the exact language of what all is entailed, how many vehicles are affected, etc. Subaru has not responded.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I didn't go to the media, but I will say that this is the kind of thing that happens when you don't take care of your early adopters.

I've ranted about this before, but your early adopters are your most important customers, because they're the trendsetters, and everybody they know knows it. They're your brand evangelists -- I'll say it again, the true believers. They're your strongest ally when you're in a pinch. So, why would you screw them over? Is it so difficult to imagine that they could just as easily turn into your harshest critic?

I'm an engineer, not a marketing guy, but this is all so obvious to me.

Also, I can't tell you how many people have asked me what's up with my car and why is it taking so long. The initial attention it got for being brand new and exciting is backfiring because now it's giving Subaru/Toyota a bad rap that a brand new car is having such a major problem.

you are very right, I love the way this car handles and how it is, i am one that would stick by the manufacturer and its product. I hope that they will not throw out the true enthusiasts who are willing to work with them co-operatively.

One example, i get asked about this car often and how it is. I have always praised the best aspects of the car without bringing to the table the dreaded CEL issues, Tail condensation, chirping, etc.

Seems scion is more on top of things than subaru.. Do you think toyota is the one looking for the root cause? They do have TSBs out quicker than subaru..

Looks like chances are looking worse that the flashed ECU will fix the problem.

Ok, so I got my FRS back on Sept. 19th. Swapped the OCV and flashed the ECU.
I had a long car trip planned from the 23rd to the 30th. I took the car and travelled approx
2700 miles. Car runs great, WHEN MOVING !!!!!
I had idle issues 4x, no CEL though. It seems to me the car doesn't know where it wants to idle now. When it did happen, the idle would go up and down rapidly from 500 to 1200rpm.
Also, now when you pull up to a stop, the car steps down it's idle from 1000 to 900 to 800
Etc. Etc. to 600rpm. It never did that before. FBS.
The car went back in shop yesterday, I had been talking to SOA during the trip and they set up an appt. for me. When I got to the dealership, they had no idea I was coming.
They also had no idea about the TSB about the fuel pump !!!! morons !!!!
So now it feels like they dont want to say the car is back in the shop for the idle issue, just for the fuel pump. Which is not in stock and my car will be in the shop all week !!!
SO TIRED of all this car BS.
Just because the mechanic couldn't reproduce the problem in ten minutes of driving, doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist !!!!! IT DOES !!!! But it seems that they don't believe me. I'm about to contact some local or regional media about this BS.
Scion CS sucks !!!!!

One thing I've noticed is that the idle fluctuation only happens when the engine is fully warmed up. So you may want to tell the mechanic/service advisor that the problem only happens when the engine is fully warm.

By way of update, my service advisor just called to tell me the ECU got re-flashed and the car is ready to be picked up. Fingers crossed.

I just wondered.
Sorry if this was already covered, but I can't search for 3 character long words like "new ECU" and I don't want to read through 40+ pages for this.

I noticed that most of the FR-S owners with CEL have VIN of above 7000.
For those few that have VIN of lower numbers and still had CEL issue like the ones in the quote above, did you get your ECU changed to have the DRL turned off?
Just wondering and curious.

update: got call today I can pick her up tomorrow. I'm interested to see the repair orders since SOA told me the hard parts wouldn't be at the dealer till 10/5?? I'll get copies of my stuff and update accordingly.
