For me, it was test-driving a Cayman S and realizing how close the FR-S came in a lot of important areas for me - handling, feedback/feel, seating position - for a fraction of the price. Don't get me wrong, having later owned a Boxster S, I can tell you that the Cayman/Boxster S are obviously better cars with a LOT more power and better interior, but that's what sealed the deal for me. I still think the FR-S is one of the best bargains under $50k if that's what you're looking for.

Wanted one since they came out, and that was only based on looks and the very idea of it, an AE86 successor. I've also always wanted an S2000, and I've owned one Honda before (DC2 ITR with a K20 swap) and loved it. But the S2000 is way more impractical, and wouldn't have warranty if I bought one now. And I didn't want an FWD car, and also not another turbo car. So the 86 was a natural choice somehow.
