Actually they did a pre-order similar for the Prius Plug-in. There was actually no warning, they sent an email and announced price with a time of 96 hours to react with the configurations you wanted.( I think it sold out within the first day though) With-in this time, they advise that you go into your local dealer and prepare for all the paperwork for financing if needed. If you don't react and confirm your order in time you will not get the car and the car isn't even released until probably fall of 2012.
I am thinking it will be very similar with no discounts and no extra perks, just you get the car earlier. There was no test driving available etc for this car. Unless you went to one of their like two events in San Francisco or Detroit for the event test drives to purchase their cars early. More for those that are sure. To me a deal like that would piss me off =/. |

They won't raise the price if a ton of people sign up. They can't, because Subaru isn't going to care how many people say they will buy the scion while expecting it to be cheap. I agree that you shouldn't sign up if you aren't ready and willing to buy, which is why I said they should take a $500 deposit DURING the signup process instead of after the selection process. They simply need to place a hold and not follow process the transaction, it's pretty simple stuff and would weed out the multiple signups, etc.

Could be data for their options/accessories/aftermarket companies, too. How many of the 'first on the block' types would also be more customizing-oriented?

Some people (not you Dave) talk as if price has been settled at this point. HELLO. No it hasn't; not til it's been announced to the public. Those people expect price to stay locked based on their gut feeling after seeing tons of interest on the interwebz? (Read: hype) I expect price to be based on market conditions of the current quarter. The thousands on Scion's email list hyped up and interested =/= the number of people financially ready to purchase in Q2.

I am with the OP. However if they see a ton of us on here saying we would sign up if we didn't think it would screw us in the end don't you think they have some lacky reading forums to look for things like this? Just a thought.

it'll be funny when all 86 "randomly" chosen people dont end up buying it because of some insane price. they could've at least said it'll start at under 25k or something

Opinion. If you believe this then more power too you man. Maybe you are right, but highly doubt it. It is pretty absurd to believe that the final MSRP will be decided THEN announced the day of. Especially with another brand selling what is essentially the same car, releasing it at essentially the same time. |

My opinions are formulated on facts which I am also stating. The final MSRP should be decided after they get their cumulative analysis results in maybe a couple weeks to a few days before the public announcement (opinion). Like right now they have a price window approved or mandated by Toyota execs, but there's still a fudge factor/wiggle room to work with bound by a threshold.

I won't sign up. It's not like I will get a discount. I will leave the opportunity to get it early to others who are really desperate. I couldn't care less if I took delivery in May or September as long as the price is right.

Toyota doesn't need a web sign up list to determine how much they should sell the car for. This is just another way to build more buzz, its similar to what they did for the LFA. They're not stupid, they already know we want the car based on all the internet chatter for the past two years.

I will say this whole thing just seems a bit useless, why would they do this when they know we want the car so badly, to get a few extra sales? or the get some sales sooner than others?
just doesn't make sense all I'm saying |
