The trick with rotary engines is to do it right the first time, and not take shortcuts.

I havent had an engine failure in my FD since 2003 (overboost).

I was at the 400-420 rwhp level from 2003 until 2009, probably 50k miles if I had to estimate.

I sold the old engine still running strong, and bought a brand new srmotorsports 20b motor. Bridge ported it and did all the oil/coolant mods to it. Been making 500-575 rwhp (depending on boost) ever since, including 7 track days (with two more coming up this weekend) and two DGRR trips. I beat on the car every time I drive it, and she keeps coming back for more

A friend of mine from high school, who bought his FD literally the same day I bought mine has over 120k miles on his and is still running strong, albeit his is completely stock except for a catback exhaust.

Rotary engines are like hot women, typically very high maintenance, but if you listen to what she needs she'll stick with you till you screw up.

Also, I love the exhaust note of a rotary with an aggressive port job and open exhaust. I still dream of a 3rotor with a giant snail attached to it.

More speculation....Under 1800lbs is still the target plus a 1.5 liter turbo.

Gotcha! Next Mazda MX-5 Miata Secrets Uncovered

Kijima's long-term goal to take the MX-5 back to basics rubbed off on his successor, next-generation MX-5 chief engineer Nobuhiro Yamamoto, who says his aim was to create a sub-2200-pound roadster. When planning for the new model started five years ago, around the same time as Mazda's revolutionary Skyactiv technology, the company's mission was to reduce fuel consumption by 30 percent and curb weight by at least 8 percent. The product planners told Yamamoto that he had to lighten and downsize the car, but maintain current interior space levels. After exhaustive restyling, an insider tells us Yamamoto achieved a curb weight of around 2100 pounds, thanks to the car's new lightweight construction made possible in large part through the use of Mazda's new weight-efficient Skyactiv chassis, powertrain, and body.

And with a lighter car, "you can downsize the powertrain," says a source close to Mazda. The new MX-5 will be fitted with a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine generating around 125 hp with mileage north of 50 mpg in Japanese measurements, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Meanwhile, the U.S.-spec model will continue to employ a 2.0-liter engine producing upwards of 145 hp.
Slated for a March 2013 debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the new production model is expected to land in showrooms in the fall of 2013.

Sooo kawaii!! I want to take it home!

But seriously, I don't think it looks that bad. I like the bullet mirrors and the wheels. The non-smiley grille is nice. It's basically the same color as my NB with some nicer lines that remind me of some Spitfire/Elan hybrid while still retaining a Miata heritage.

Who knows if it's real or not. I wouldn't mind a Skyactiv-D version though...

What?! that little thing is AWESOME! it's a super-efficient-GoKart! how could you not be happy about that? near 40-50 mpg?! almost same dimensions as the original? C'mon, what more nostalgia could you put into this thing and still make it cheap and a success? I love it already

PS: Btw, could we get some PhotoChops already? this thing would look so great in different versions.

I'm not a fan of the render either. Then again, the Miata/MX-5 has never enticed my interest.

IMO the automotive styling has made such little progress in the past years. Kia/Hyundai have improved because there was no other place they could have gone. I saw a White 2011 Kia Optima the other day and it reminded me of a drug dealers' car with its size and those stupid wheels (all rights reserved). Back to the topic on hand...

It's interesting that Mazda have taken the reduce weight approach. 2100lbs is basically Scion iQ weight (2116lbs on Scion.ca). Kudos if they manage to achieve that in this day and age of safety.

We're not getting that version. We're getting a detuned 2.0L, probably just a version of the old MZR if I were to guess.

And the pic is a not just a random rendering but an official rendering given to the Tokyo patent office.

Well, regardless, this thing will surely be a fuel efficient street legal GoKart, even if its no SkyActiv, its still great!
