This has me freaked out now, especially since they haven't contacted me at all. I really hope I can get mine repaired or maybe, mine just won't be as conflicted.

no reason to get it repaired now. Wait a few months. The only problems they have reported it causing is some stalling. I don't remember seeing it cause anything major. And reportedly if anything happens it is in the first 5000 miles or so.

It stalls because a spring breaks and the engine is probably toast.
As you said though the reported spring failures are rare and early.
At the rate things are headed there will be more reported failures after the fix than there were prior to it.
I have looked but can find no reference to post "repair" failures in the other 375,000 cars affected that have different engines but used the same springs. Would appear at this point the failures are restricted to the FA20.
If not in California where the repair is being forced then I would either wait or not bother at all.

I was wondering about Crosstreks and Imprezas and how they are doing through this and what failure rates they're seeing. The FB engine isn't much different at all.

There is no engine disassembly on the non-twin engines. Remove the engine, remove the valve covers. They made special tools to remove the springs without any further disassembly. The tools won’t work on the twins due to the differences in the engines.

Yes, but do we really feel that the spring work/head disassembly is the root cause of most of these failures, or is it workman ship on cleaning the sealant and reapply the sealant. If the engines were having failures related to the heads/cams vs spun bearings I would for sure be thinking this was a bit more suspicious.

It is without a doubt the sealant issue. There were engines spinning bearings due to sealant straight from the factory so even a slight misapplication of sealant can cause an issue. The oil channels and ports on the FA 20 are very, very close to where the sealant is applied and it only takes one small piece to get into them to toast a bearing.

The FB engine gets pulled then only the valve covers are removed. A tool is installed that goes over the top of the cams and under the rockers and compresses the springs. Once the springs are compressed the rockers are pulled out. Using this method avoids the need to remove the cam caps and cams. So the only packing they have to mess with is in a few spots on the rubber valve cover gasket. So there is WAY less to mess up on the non-Twin recall. It's a shame this method couldn't be used on the FA but the springs are buried under the cams leaving no easy way to get a compressor on them.

Well thanks to tanner we have info that includes more than just what is on this forum. As I see it the situations is not quite as dire as the picture here appears.

We still have no clue how many were done with no issues (or where issues have not shown up yet).
