Depends a lot on where you live. Urban drivers of course tend to drive less on a daily basis but suburban or rural can do far more. The current average for the US appears to be 13,474 annually which is very close to that magic 100K for 7 years total. when you consider that the "average" driver only goes where they need to when they have to then adding another 40 or 50K for the people that want to drive would not seem unreasonable. As said I think you will find there are far more 100+K cars out there than you would expect based on the average. You are actually way low in the scale as opposed to the 100K guys being way high.


Oh, and just as an example my 4 year old car (will be 5 in July) has 124,000 miles on it. Due to changes in my work locations this is actually down at least 50,000 from where it could have been when I first bought it.

That can be hard for me to grasp. It wouldn't even have got warmed up yet. I did that in under 5 months. Ohhhhh the money I have spent on oil changes!

You must not drive for fun much. I have the same commute (4.1 miles each way), DD the twin about 2.5 days a week on average, and am at 21k on my 2015 purchased January 2015. I thought I had really low mileage!

As @Tcoat says, it depends on where you live. Atlanta metro, for example, is a "commuting" town. Very few people live within "spitting distance" of work. I drive 40 miles each way to work, mostly rural roads. Most everyone one I know drives at least 10 miles, and some up to 60.

In addition, there are no stores within walking distance of my house, basically we drive everywhere. I own 5 cars, 2 of which I am the primary driver. Between the FRS (weekdays and some weekends) and the Suburban (weekends and vacations) I drive about 35,000 miles a year.

I do think I'm higher than most, but I don't really think I'm that out of the ordinary. My boss drives an F250. He lives 5 miles from work, but overall puts 25,000 miles a year on his truck because he uses it just about every weekend to haul his boat to a fishing tournament somewhere.

That's life outside the city limits.

Not as much anymore because we're always taking the Outback at all other times and on the weekends. I used to drive in the canyons a lot more on the weekends, but my weekends are usually busy with family stuff nowadays.

Yeah,I did say if you have a sizeable commute. I commute 30 miles total to and from work every day. Seems like the biggest difference is that shopping,whether it be food,clothes,whatever,are all within five miles from me.

Also,I bought my car with almost 20k miles on it in 2015.I put about 250 miles between fillups,which usually about every nine days or so. That comes out to about just over 10k for the year.So just speaking from my perspective,145k is still a shit ton of miles,but I do understand if you live in a rural area.

Actually our cars have similar mileage and I was thinking the opposite. This is a good opportunity to get a LOT of zero mileage parts on my car, particularly seals, gaskets and such. I would be more likely to NOT do this if my car had fewer miles on it. I would wait until I had over 100K miles then take it in rather than replacing relatively new parts that work.

Just a different way of looking at it. It's the same reason I had the "cricket TSB" done right before the warranty expired. I didn't need it, but it zeroed out my pump.

Actually....robots more than likely assemble the valve train. You have no clue the level of training that is involved in Japanese manufacturing. I'm pretty sure their vehicles wouldn't be nearly bulletproof if they had "local yokels" building them.

I however do. Robots may torque bolts but most of the assembly is still done by people. They are not always highly trained or even skilled. The people that make the parts are usually even less skilled and trained. People like to play with the urban legend that Japanese cars are built better than all the rest. That has not been accurate in the last 30 years.

So at 10K a year you are just at 30% of the average. From my perspective you may as well just sell the car and walk everyplace. 145K on a seven year old car is nothing compared in the overall scheme of things.
