It's a weight saver. You should not put anything in there although helium or hydrogen would be ok.

It is also handy to put your fingers in there to pull the surround off.

i put my OFT tablet in there when its not plugged in, when i know im launching the car, ill put the OFT in my door cupholder

I have Speed Alliance / Vertex business cards and a clover charm in there right now lol. Nothing else really fits in there. I can't even fit the Samsung S7 Edge in there nor the cupholder phone slot in the center. Even till this day, I'm still thinking of what I can put in there that'll be really useful haha.

I think the slot was designed at the same time as the ICE circa 1997. Phones from the 1990's fit really nicely..
