If that's true, is it confirmed that the factory oil is non-synthetic or otherwise better suited to break in?
iono I trust the manufacturer to fill it with the right oil.

FB25 came with 0W-20 synthetic from the factory. I doubt the 0W-20 oil in the FA20 is any different.

Then perhaps that's an indication that that's the way it's meant to be...
Afterall, dino oil is cheaper than synthetic by a long shot.

Even my "lowly" 1ZR-FE* had, AFAIK, 0W20 from the factory.
I won't reject the idea that a dino oil would be better for break-in, but I'd like to see some evidence.

It's so well known I'm not sure where to find "evidence"

It has already been discussed that honda provides non-synthetic in cars that require synthetic and that oil is supposed to remain in the engine until the break in period is well past over, I have never tried to break a motor in on Synthetic, I have been told for too long by too many knowledgeable experts that you never use synthetic for break in.

But why would the factories be adding synthetic at greater expense if it's not good for break in?

And that's exactly my issue: it's not the first time I'm hearing this, but each time no evidence was shown.
By the way:

One of the myths surrounding synthetic oils is that new engines require a break-in period with conventional oil. The fact is, current engine manufacturing technology does not require this break-in period. As indicated by the decisions of the engineers who design the high-performance cars listed above, Mobil 1 can be used starting the day you drive the car off the showroom floor.
Are they right? Are they trying to sell some oil?

Of course they're trying to sell oil, but they could also be right. Who provides the evidence that you shouldn't break in engines with synthetic? Old geezers who've been building engines for decades; I'm willing to be a lot of them aren't with the times. Beyond that, people repeat what they hear; so if someone heard old geezer engine builder say it, they repeat it and so on and so forth. It probably won't matter TOO much...

I think because they do a short break-in in the factory, then swap oils. It's a 'good enough' solution probably. It probably costs them less to do a short break-in then go synthetic, than doing a longer full break-in.

Factory is all about compromise/'good-enough', not what's 'best'.

I would think that Subaru engineers #1 priority when deciding on a break-in procedure is to minimize warranty repairs. I don't think they'd put more expensive synthetic in there unless that was what was best for the car. The bean counters wouldn't have let the synthetic fly otherwise.

This makes sense and to be safe, I'm going to follow what the manual recommends.

Bingo. Follow the manual. So much of break-in mythology relies on old wives tales passed down throughout the years. Subaru and Toyota have been making cars forever and have been testing the 86 for years now. I'll trust them.
