I am not even going to attempt to debate the merits of "self" insuring vs insurance companies since it has been my experience that most "self" insurers are pretty sure that every single business in the world is in a conspiracy to rip them off somehow and they are so much smarter than people that are suckered into things.

The simple point I was making was that if you are NOT paying full insurance because you can't really afford it then you sure as hell are not going to be in a position to "self" insure.

Not necessarily. There are folks just on this forum that could afford a more expensive car but still buy this one (or similar). Not everyone hangs their personal self-worth on the type/price of the car they drive.

That said though, those same people are smart enough not to run without insurance. Why run that financial risk only to save maybe a few hundred dollars a year on insurance?

The difference in price between what I pay the full insurance vs the minimum required means that it would take me 12 years to save the replacement value of the car!

Ya if I had a $2000 beater it wouldn't be worth it but on the off chance a bus barrels into me tomorrow I want somebody else to pay full value not pull it out of my pocket.

Hello just joined today and found this message board.
I thought I was a outlier being 40+, but its nice to see all these "Gentleman racers" on here.

I have been driving Hondas my whole life so I really took my time to find the car I really wanted, I ordered my BRZ back in September and picked it up right before Christmas. Last year I got my beak wet in autocrossing I told myself if I liked I would try a rwd car. I had a great time and I expect to have even more fun in a well balanced car.

I had a buddy that let me test drive his NA Miata and I simply didn't fit. Everything was fine except it was really difficult to engaged the clutch because I'm too wide and tall. I'm in the Northeast so I have only driven the BRZ in the wet a few times but boy it is a different sensation spinning the rear wheels instead of the fronts. I'm probably going to be doing the autocross school at summit point, if anyone else is near the DC area it would be nice to convoy together.

Joined both clubs last year, 40 yrs and twin owner.
Original plan was to buy a Gen2 as second car in early 2021, but with the delays I changed the plan and got a 18, which was a blast (I took the one I could find, so I accepted a different color from plan). The driving dynamics were amazing and convinced me that this was the way to go (cross-shopped with GM alphas that I was more familiar and some other care). Covid threw a wrench on supply chain and created another change of plan for me, as I was able to sell the 18 and get a 22, this time with the color I want (WRB).

It’s never too late to have a mid -life crisis!

I’ll keep this one until the last year the gas BRZ is in production. Then I’ll get it and that should last me until my keys are taken away.

I'm 33 and was worried I might be too old for this car, you guys made me feel a lot better about ordering one lol

I guess I should say I'm here out of ignorance. I didn't realize there was such as thing as being too old (or too young) for a mid-priced bottom end sports car, or any other car for that matter.

This is the 3rd or 4th thread on this subject since I joined here in 2012 so it must really be a thing.

About the only thing I feel too old for is a 20-something girlfriend, and that's only because MomHawk reminds be of that on a regular basis.

It's not a conspiracy. Pretty basic and simple concept: Insurance companies charge enough for full coverage that they will overall make a profit. All there is to it really. On average, if people just paid for damages they incur, they'd come out ahead. Otherwise, insurance companies wouldn't be in business. Not like that's a secret or anything...

Larger point to me is to buy well within your means, whether you "self-insure" for collision/etc. or pay $$$ to an insurance company.

I’m not aware of an age limit for having fun.

I think part of it is my friends all drive much faster and classier cars lol, I'm the only one going backwards 😅

I'm coming from the evo world and my experience with that has me wanting something a lot simpler that I can actually learn to drive with(evo is basically ez mode)
