Sadly the general public gets way too wrapped up in spec sheets. Especially performance/sports cars. Weight usually isn't even on there.

I think that's mostly true, but the BRZ and 86 are still around!

This is very true. Horsepower is easier to add than removing weight, and it does much more for those basic metrics like 0-60 than weight loss will. It is too bad.

Ugh, ANOTHER "Future Z car thread"? Isn't mine from a few years ago good enough to just bump? I just read all 6 pages of this thread and there isn't anything said here that wasn't said in that thread, SMH lol.

Leather SEATS are standard. What you're referring to is paying extra to have other parts of the interior covered in leather (which I don't think anyone considers unreasonable, though definitely a dumb option).

I think it depends on how people drive. Drive a Prius like it is a M3 and the fuel economy is worse, a la Top Gear. There may be more tuning that is needed to dial in the economy like how tuning has improved CVTs feel to be less lame. It is brand new technology.

Do people really believe that Nissan, a company in dire financial straits, still recovering from the whole Ghosn fiasco, is going to pump funds it cannot spare into developing a brand new Z sportscar? These rumours have been circulating for the last 5 years and nothing eventuates. Nissan is now a very conservative company, not taking risks with its parlous financial situation. I just don’t see it.
Heck, if any new Z happens it will most likely be an SUV with ‘Z’ branding - Nissan themselves floated a trial balloon with the GripZ SUV concept a few years ago. SUVs sell in high volumes nowadays, sportscars just don’t. By contrast, there has not been a single official Z coupe concept released (fanboi renders on the internet don’t count for squat), absolutely nothing. And this is telling, because nearly all new production sportscars are foreshadowed a few years before with much hyped concept cars at motor shows etc. Marketing 101. Generate hype and buzz etc. There has been no recent official commitment to a new Z from Nissan HQ (unlike the next gen twins, which both Subaru and Toyota committed to). And not a single camouflaged prototype seen testing (a lone 370Z on the Ring with some holes drilled in the nose is not enough evidence of a new Z). I just can’t see it happening. Not anytime soon, at least. I reckon you’ve got more chance of seeing the RX Vision coupe from Mazda go into production (and that’s unlikely, but at least they made a concept) than seeing a new Z. I’d love to be proven wrong, the world still needs RWD sportscars, but I’m not holding my breath. |

A110 has no Z heritage at all. The Z represents boldly styled, front-engined, 6 cylinder affordable sportscars. The antithesis of the A110, which is a softly styled, mid-engined, turbo 4 cylinder and very expensive (Lotus/Porsche money in AU) sportscar. Doesn’t make sense and would not satisfy the Z fans at all.

I just checked. On the base Cayman, partial leather seats are standard. Selecting standard interior with full leather seats forces you to select the sport seats, which is an $810 dollar option. |

https://www.nissanusa.com/vehicles/f...ct-sedans.html The problem was that Nissan's history is one of extreme ups and downs. In the mid/late 1990s a bunch of failed real estate investments ended up combining with sagging sales and inefficient production to drag Nissan Japan towards bankruptcy. This was the time when Nissan produced the S13, S15, R34, and Z32 on 4 separate platforms AND assembly lines. Ghosn came in with his financial expertise, and along with it came Renault + the French government. The turnaround was pretty stunning, but it came at the expense of almost everything we loved about Nissan. 2002 was probably the low point, look at the cars offered in 2002 and tell me which one genuinely excites you... I'll wait. After that, it became extreme platform/cost sharing. The VQ was in almost every car offered, the QR became the 4 cylinder workhorse, and enthusiasts didn't get anything substantial until the R35... which came with the price tag of absurd (I'm counting the dealer markups due to low supply). Meanwhile, Nissan enjoyed some of the highest margins in the automotive market. Their regular sedans were very competitive on the marketplace, and didn't reek of blandness like Toyota. At the end of the day, Ghosn made Nissan a profitable company, but it also left it with little production capability to make exciting cars. Plus, Nissan doesn't have the luxury of Toyota, where another company (Subaru) has excess capability to produce a niche car (86/BRZ), nor does it have a strategic advantage with another manufacturer (BMW) to produce a niche car that doesn't tie up production (Magna Steyr/Austria) So good luck waiting for the next exciting sports car from Nissan. I gave up hope after the S15 and ended up with a BRZ in 2013 because Toyota/Subaru delivered what Nissan could not. |

Platform sharing was amazing for Nissan, but for some reason everyone ignored Infiniti. They came out with a bunch of different sporty vehicles all based off the Z. And if it wasn't based on the Z it was based on the Pathfinder. At one point everyone including the media exclaimed the G was better than the BMW 3 series. Before Nissan almost destroyed everything with that horrific cvt they had an awesome run of cars in all sorts of different segments. |
