My neighbor has a yellow one of those Datsun trucks, and there is another on my way to work that is white. I would prefer that size as well. A Suzuki Jimney for off-road 4x4 driving. I have nothing to tow. I could imagine needing to tow a car and supplies to a track someday, maybe.

But why? What’s the actual measurable benefit for a truck this size and purpose? Nobody is driving these things to jobsites with a pallet of cinder blocks in the back. The Ridgeline is one of the best trucks for 90% of people who want a truck and it’s unibody. Body on frame is useless weight in this class.
Unibody is lighter, strong enough, more fuel efficient, and much more comfortable.

my biggest problem lately with unibody vehicles is that it makes mounting a hitch sort of a fiasco. when you're mounting it to what is essentially folded stamped sheet metal, there's a number of very specific processes and materials needed, and if any one of those steps is messed up or omitted, it drops a 4k tow rating to 500 pounds...

I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek. Having said that....

Besides the VERY valid point re/ mounting a serious hitch already made by Soundman, "strong enough" isn't as good as "way more than strong enough," and "much more comfortable" is a matter of personal taste. My wife's unibody ML500 drives like a big tight car. Our set-up-for-camping body-on-frame LX470 (basically a Toyota Landcruiser for anyone unfamiliar) is, subjectively, much more comfortable. It's quieter by far, a bit more compliant, much smoother over bad roads and off-road...there's no comparison. I did install a class III hitch on it myself. Had a '93 Range Rover that was body-on-frame too. I much prefer working on and driving heavy duty vehicles constructed that way....especially living in the salt belt.

So, yeah. I won't buy a unibody truck because to me, it ain't a truck...it's a car that looks like a truck. Doesn't mean you shouldn't, or that it's not a truck to you. Different priorities, is all.

of course, i couldn't just do an xb, and would need a japanese version so i could do one of these front end conversions

lol, discussing 'comfort' on a sports car forum. honestly, my tacoma rides like a cadillac compared to all my previous vehicles, 86 included. any smoother and the steering would be like stirring a bowl of jello.

fuel efficiency is sort of a red herring. fuel efficiency improvements over the years have had more to do with combustion efficiency than chassis design.

in fact, if fuel economy is a priority, the 2019+ ford ranger is a better selection, as it averages 21/26(2wd), and 20/24(4wd), where the ridgeline does 18/24.

Comfort is important when 90% of them are daily driven with no load in the bed.

You’re right, a large share of the fuel efficiency improvements came from increasing combustion efficiency. But Ford didn’t spend the R/D to drop over 700lbs from the F150 because they thought aluminum sounds cool. Your fuel economy argument is kind of moot between the Honda and Ranger when it’s that close, and it’s An NA V6 vs a turbo4. Turbo motors are favored by the EPA tests because they don’t mimic real people’s driving style very well, so in real life I’d expect the Honda to do as well as the Ranger.

Also funny that the Ridgeline with its puny independent suspension and weak unibody tows 5000lbs when the ranger only does 3500. Shit, I used to have a FWD SAAB convertible that towed that much (Google Saab 9-3 towing capacity), what do you even need a truck for lol?

My point is that you can design unibodies as strong as you need to, and a proper tow bar setup will maximize the capacity of the chassis. Just don’t have the guy from U-Haul weld a dumb bar across the rear end. I’ve helped a friend install the OEM tow bar for an old BMW 7 series and it was pretty easy. It basically replaces the rear crash bar. There were a bunch of pickup points to also get 3500lbs capacity from it, but it only took us a few hours.

This will sell well. Alot ppl need a work truck with decent payload capacity and little towing need. Even if I hate the CVT the mpg of the hybrid will make alot of companies and ppl happy who drive alot for there job
