Nope, unplugged mine over winter and when I plugged both terminals in to start her up and drive, the radio still had my presets and the previous trips showing (this was 2-3months of being disconnected). I did get the dead pedal after reconnecting though (ECU relearn). I think I'll disconnect it again, as there still is a miniscule dead pedal zone after 100miles+.

Interesting... Technology has come a long way.

It feels like it's running stronger than before. But I'm getting constant crickets now Which kinda sucks.

I've been noticing my gas needle drop faster though. I haven't ran a full tank in it yet Though.

Gas level dropping faster than normal? Hmmm, I think we can safely chalk this up to "I-got-my-car-back-and-it's-friggin-awesome" syndrome.

They make a cable that plugs into the obd2 port from a jumper pack or other power source to keep power going to the ecu and other systems. On newer high end cars like Mercedes if you disconnect the battery without using something to keep power to the ecu it can cause serious electronic problems.

Seems like a step backward.

Backword is the new forward.
We obviously can't expect people who drive cars to be able to operate them safely so we have to make the car do more of the drivers job.
And what about the environment? We have to have super strict emissions requirements otherwise cars would actually be affordable, both to own and keep in good condition.
And if it wasn't for all the expensive testing required it would be too easy for new companies to get into the market and we all know competition is a bad thing for consumers.

The purpose of the cord is not specifically for the ECU engine tunes and such, it can relearn its tune anyway. It's just for the reason that a lot of settings that the owner may have configured may be lost like seat memories, controls radio and nav presets etc.

That's what it is mostly used for but you can actually damage the ecu on some cars just by disconnecting the battery. It sounds retarded but it's true.

That seems more like it. Otherwise a dead battery or a blown fuse would be catastrophic.

o.O

While on its face it seems implausible, I've been wrong about some pretty dumb stuff. I can roll with "crazy but true." At least it's not the case with our car.

It can clear basic settings in the ecu that can make the engine run very poorly, to the point that putting it in gear sometimes stalls it, making it hard to relearn the settings. If you have the proper diagnostic tools you can restore the settings to a better point. For a lot of shops its not worth the money those tools cost when they only work on a few of those cars.
