I feel like I'm most spooked about your guys situation. I don't want to have to go thur the stress, headache, and hassle if something goes wrong and I have to show up to the dealership, hat in hand, asking for warranty work on a tracked car.

It makes me not even want to track the car... which in turn makes me not even want to own the car.

The only thing stopping me is I really like the car otherwise so I think maybe I should hold out waiting for some kind of legit fix from Toyota. On the fence right now.

Since we know what the issue is with the car, it's all about preventive maintenance if it really comes down to it (like Subaru/Toyota not owning up). Let's throw in a number like $500 in parts and add that into the consumable list. Our friends at Dezoris have a video on how to replace those awesome seals. Guys in Japan are doing the same. It's just added maintenance hassle, but way better than blowing motors like a baus.

What would be considered preventive maintenance for a DI system?

I've read the Dezoris post. OMG, what a tedious hassle. Not sure I have the patience to do that repeatedly. I wrench when I have to but I certainly not cuz I want to. It'd be different if I knew I only had to do it once.

Tracklyfe ... on a car with an alleged factory design flaw.

My other tracked cars haven't been that prissy.

The moment you hear a pop, you better change out those injector seals and surrounding parts. Not a big deal to keep it going. Run it too long and you will have a seized engine.

Out of curiosity, does Subaru have a history of making unreliable track cars?

Some necessary upgrades are required, but most owners put their priorities elsewhere hence some failure. Like tracking any car, there are priorities and necessities.

I guess I'm used to reading Civics, Integras, S2000s, and Miatas not needing anything more than your basic preventative maintenance, or am I wrong?

When I had my STI, there were a good number of folks cracking ringlands. Stock, modified, didn't matter, detonation was a big concern even on the stock tune (similar to the DI seal issue with our cars).

But as CSG David said, most cars appear to have some kind of failures when tracked hard. Corvettes have temperature and oil starvation issues (even LS7 Z06's w/dry sump), Elises/Exiges have fuel and oil starvation issues, Caymans have oil starvation and PS temperature issues (in addition to the broader IMS bearing issue), etc. There's a reason manufacturers will deny warranty coverage on cars that have been tracked frequently.

From what I can tell, the S2000 seems to be an anomaly when it comes to being a fairly reliable track car from the factory.

What about Integra R's? I can pick one up for about 8k locally to toy around at the track.

It is fairly difficult to compare older cars with newer ones. Older cars are incredibly barebone and are seriously just built with the necessary basics. This car is a little different. The DI system puts a whole new ball game in the equation and adds another mode of complexity to the system. Theoretically speaking, DI is supposed to be excellent in making sure you have the proper air to fuel mixture and proper atomization for cleaner combustion, power production, and emissions. For now, the method to keep things alive is to replace the seals as regular maintenance.

Power production shouldn't be a huge issue as well. This car is built as an affordable sports car with some corners cut for cost reduction. Honda was an engine company prior to being a motorcycle and car company so their sporty engines have always been incredible. It is an entirely different scope from a project management standpoint.

Of course don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong.
