It was in the sun for a while, but I didn't try directly heating it.

I found slightly warming it up with either a blow drier on high heat or a heat gun on low heat helped. Maybe if you ever need to remove the Toyota emblems in the future, give them a few passes with a blow drier.

Boring learning-manual update for the day:

Slowly getting better. TBH my parents' neighborhood kinda sucks for learning. It basically has medium hills, medium-small hills, and then most of the "flat" areas have a very very slight incline that still causes the car to fall back in neutral.

Went to a parking lot in the area and spent about 45 mins working on things. Mostly moving with clutch and no gas, stopping, repeat. Then trying to go into first from a stop, going 5 feet, stopping, and repeating. For the most part I stopped stalling on that stuff.

Still stalling occasionally though and sometimes it takes a couple tries to get going again.

Occasionally I think I smell the clutch or squeal the wheels from a stop (less often now though) and I feel bad about the car, but I'm counting on the fact that these cars can handle some shitty abuse at the beginning. My dad even made a comment along the lines of "hopefully this car can withstand this shit."

Again, really thankful for your advice guys. Someday I'll buy you all a round or something.

Wow, he was being rude by saying that. Yes, the car can absolutely handle this with no long term effects.

It's probably more damaging to the car to rest your foot on the clutch and have it partially depressed during normal driving, to ride the clutch in stop and go traffic every day, to try to release the clutch when the shifter isn't in a gear, to keep the clutch depressed while sitting at a stop light, and to rest your right hand on the shifter while driving.

And I'll take you up on that beer sometime.

There have been times when I probably partially depressed the clutch too long and whatnot but in the last couple times I drove today I got myself to do it less and less. Trying to minimize bad habits.

My dad has good intentions but generally he'll assume things when he doesn't _really_ understand them and get a little..stubborn/annoyed. Like he supported me getting it in manual in the first place, but just the learning aspect he doesn't really understand, coupled with the car sounding sad sometimes when I'm not perfect/whatever.

For sure.

If it's a V6 or V8 with a redline of 6000 I could see how they'd have plenty of torque down low and 3000 RPM is too high for normal driving. But this is a fairly low-torque 2.0L 4-banger and you need to keep RPMs higher to have any semblance of torque. If you are below 2000 rpm you are lugging the motor and that is bad for the motor too. So... maybe he's not *wrong* but remind him that redline is up at 7400 RPM on this motor. Well maybe you don't want to get into that conversation with him just yet. You might be better off just agreeing with him and keeping RPMs between 2000-3000 when he's in the car, and during the break-in period.
Argh, just realized I left this response in another tab:

Gotcha, that makes sense. There've definitely been a few times when I was around 1000-2000 but I try not to keep it there long. Still getting used to even considering RPMs at all. I set the setting for the RPM limit (I think it's called that?) to 4000 RPM, but maybe I should drop it to 3000 for now instead.

Yup, do the throwout bearing a favor and don't clutch in at stop lights or sitting in traffic. And I forget why it's bad to rest your hand's weight on the shifter, but it's bad mmmkay?

I've been doing that a bit at stop signs and stuff, but once I'm used to everything I'll be switching to neutral at stops. In fact, even my dad had me do stuff in the parking lot where I'd start into first, slow down and stop, then switch the shifter to neutral, then back again. So that was good advice to get me ready for stalls or just going into neutral at stops.

Haha yeah. I've been good about not leaving my hand on the shifter so far. That's like the easiest thing to do so far :| lol.

It cost a pretty penny at $9.199/gallon. But this is only my second time doing it. I'm running OFT OTS stage 1 91 tune, but I figured since the car's going to sit, might as well have a 93 octane mix in it (don't think the gas will degrade that fast tho). Since I've been getting stuff for the Yaris, I figured I should do something for the FR-S.

Edit: only filled up with 3.5 gallons (3.496 if you want to be exact). That's more than enough to get a slightly higher than 93 octane mix for our cars (assuming the rest of the tank is 91).

As long as you don't get in the habit of clutching in at stops, you'll be fine.

Yeah, I don't want to do that. If in traffic or being at a red light, does moving forward in 1st by just releasing the clutch to the engagement point count or would you say I need to just completely get to moving in 1st with gas and no clutch?
