There's no need for hostility in this thread. If you like using the hand brake, use it. If not, don't. There's no "right" way to go about it. Just make sure whatever method you use, you don't roll backwards. That's all that really matters.

I use hand brake on hills I feel I can't accelerate properly on, ie: will stall or roll. I have the tool, it gets the job done. Why risk an accident and looking like an idiot with a race car who can't drive it just so someone on the internet doesn't tell me "I'm doing it wrong"

LOL

You say this jokingly (I assume) but don't forget, there are a lot of irrational people, with guns, out there...

Here's why - it's not a race car, and it can be done without the ebrake. If you need to use it, then you simply need more practice. I could say I like to flip my wipers on every time I start off, just because I want to be sure I can see. But if it's 70 degrees and sunny, then there's not really much point, right? If someone points out what a ridiculous thing it is to do that, they'd be correct, despite it being well within my rights to perform whatever foolish ritual I think needs to be done before driving away. The real solution isn't using the tool (crutch); it's refining technique.

I suppose we're all fools for wanting to use the handbrake simply because it's just easier to do in certain situations? You make it sound as if it bothers you that some people feel the need to use the handbrake at all, let alone in certain situations.

Christ.

After you drive manual for a while, hill starts are just as easy as taking off on a flat surface. You hardly ride the clutch at all
It's all about timing and becoming one with the machine

Sorry Mr driving instructor I'll try harder to refine my heel toe technique(which my ankle lacks the mobility to perform in the first place) under the highest risk situation possible next time. Turning on your wipers when you have already ascertained the windshield is clear would be foolish and nothing life using a readily available tool to make a difficult driving situation safer. If you have the ability to not stall and bump the guy behind you, then by all means, continue to not use the hand brake. For every one else who doesn't teach a driving school for drifters, I'm pretty sure we can continue to use or hand brakes just fine. There is no awful consequence that can come of it so why are you so worried about how I choose to drive my car?

I'm actually curious where this concept came from? Like, where did anyone using this technique learn it?

Personally, I couldn't give a shit how you drive your own car. But the question was asked by the OP as to whether the ebrake was needed for hill starts, and the answer is no, assuming you're skilled enough. If you're not, then either practice more, or feel free to use that crutch. Clearly you need one of the two if you think heel and toe technique is needed for any of this...
