Only reason why I downshift even though I drive an auto. I love hearing the roars and purrs the Corsa makes as it drops from 5k to idle coming to a stop. Well.. not the only reason, but most of the time.

I didn't even know that's a picture of a anime girl.

Don't mind me, I'm just a cat rolling around in a Kei car.

*and I too downshift all the time*

I usually do what seems appropriate given the situation and don't have a preference towards either driving habit.

This thread has been very informative on the pros and cons between downshifting and neutral rolling while avoiding car forum flame wars. Good job everyone!

So I am also a newbie at MT and I have a question on how to downshift properly.

Currently I normally downshift at around 3k rpms without braking and just let the clutch out slowly so the engine slows down the car. Is this the correct way or should I be putting some brakes on it to get the rpms lower before I downshift?

Ideally you want to rev up the engine to the RPMs it will be at in the new lower gear, with the clutch engaged (not pushing the pedal), then shift to the lower gear. If done perfectly, the car won't lunge at all and the shifter will go into the next gear buttah smoov.

Say you're at 3,000 RPMs in 5th gear, but you want to go to 4th. If you were already in 4th gear at your current speed, we'll say that would be 4,000 RPMs. So... ideally... you would:

1. Push in the clutch pedal
2. Shift to neutral
3. Left off of the clutch pedal
4. Rev up to 4,000 RPMs
5. Push in the clutch pedal
6. Shift to 4th
7. Let off of the clutch pedal

That'll save your synchros, your clutch, and just be a cool thing to do. It takes practice, but not as much as you might expect from my 7 step instructions.

A little late to the conversation, but I suspect that a few people on here and in real life really think I do look like that.

I don't.

...okay maybe a little
