If you compare the car to other lightweight RWD sports cars you will see how value priced it is.

Cayman with 275hp-2900lbs-$54000
S2000 when brand new 240hp-2850lbs-$35000
MX5 with 167hp-2450lbs-$26000
4C with 240hp-2370lbs-$57000

People forget lightweight is a LUXURY nowadays!

Ship it across the largest ocean in the world.
Unload it and put it onto a train.
Move it by train more than halfway across the continent.
Unload it again and put it on a truck.
Haul it hundreds of miles to deliver it to a dealership down the street from my house.
And STILL charge less for it than if I had bought one down the street from the factory in Gunma Japan.

Welcome to the global economy.

The price of shipping is relatively negligible in the grand scheme of things. Just doing a quick search and found companies that would be willing to ship a 20foot container (1 car) from Japan to the US (probably West Coast) for around $1,500. That was with 30 seconds worth of looking. When you do it on the scale that Toyota does, the destination charge on the car pretty much covers shipping, not the base price.

Yep. I always bring up the Miata when people say the car is too expensive.

Though in reality, most of the people I talk to are surprised at how cheap the car is and didn't even consider the car because it looks much more expensive than it is.
