Am I the only one who is not really interested in the "R" version? Even if it comes to the US, it will be a Scion... and if there is one thing I've learned after having 2 Scions in the family, it is that the stuff from the dealer are WAY OVERPRICED!
Even if the FR-S "R" version has the roll-cage (which I highly doubt, but who knows), they will charge you more for the breaks, etc. than if you buy them (or even better parts) elsewhere and either DIY or go to a shop and get it done on your normal FR-S. Even if you don't want to go aftermarket and prefer to buy the official toyota parts, it will still be cheaper (and more fun) to do the latter. Also it will be customizable to your liking, not a preset package. And don't forget that the "race ready" version comes with the "race ready" insurance price (no more 2+2, etc.)... That kind of takes away the point of making it affordable. To each their own, but I will most likely be going with the regular version and add things I want later. |

However, I have no idea when it'll come out. If it's 6 months later I'll wait. If it's 3 years later then I won't. I'll just waste money selling the original one and buying the R version then. Hopefully they'll give us some idea of when the R version will be released.

My guess is that the R version will be branded as "RS" (release series; that's what scion does will all their "special models"). They are one example of putting in something that is worth lets say $1000 into the car and charging you an extra $2000. I've went to the dealer for parts and installations. The parts are available online and are cheaper and usually places like trdpsparks etc. not only sell them for less, but have group buys that bring the price down even further. But that's not really where you save the most. When it comes to installation at a Scion dealer ... ... I laugh every time they give me an estimate. If the part is $300, they will charge you close to a $1000 with the installation (compare to lets say a shop that will do it for $600). Those are not exact numbers, but the proportions are about right based on my experience. And finally, especially if its something simple, I rather just do it myself. That way its not only cheaper, but I get the enjoyment out of doing it myself.Again, this is not me saying "don't buy the R version, its crap". I don't know that and I highly doubt that will be the case. I was just pointing out that it's not for everyone and that there are better alternatives (as far as best bang for the buck and possibly getting some enjoyment/pride out of DIY) |

Yeah I don't really see the "R" version coming to the states. I think it sounds better to call it the TRD version? Makes more sense...anyway if anything NA would get a Scion Fr-S 1.0 RS..2.0 RS and so on.

When you buy the R version, you aren't paying Scion dealerships to install the parts so I don't really see how labor costs add in?
I have no idea how Scion will do this special model, but if it's a different trim level then it'd likely be similar to the S2000 vs S2000 CR. All of the CR parts can be purchased as far as I know but it was cheaper to buy a CR than to turn a new base S2000 into a CR clone, even installing everything yourself. And then there's resale to consider. Special versions will ALWAYS hold more value than the base car. I could buy two 2001 GS-Rs in great shape for what I could buy a 97 Type-R for in good shape. It all comes down to whats important to you. If anything it sounds like your arguement is pro buying the R version as you wouldn't have to install the parts (or pay if you weren't capable) so I'm not sure what your actual point is.

Then again they said this car would be different from the rest of the scion line up so its possible we may see 2 trims regular and R maybe? There also was never anything special about the RS models other than color and rims so i don't see where a more performance oriented version would fit in the RS line.

So can you or can you not force induce the engine? Because as soon as I get that car I will turbocharge it, also this type R version... Does Subaru have it? Or is it only for the Toyota version? Also isn't 25,000 British pound is a tad too much for what this car has to offer? It seems like to me that this is a FR Scion with a Subaru engine in it. Throw in some brakes, LSD, a close gear ratio gearbox and slap the Toyota/Scion/Subaru name on it. Since 25,000 GBP is almost equal to $40,342 USD, that's like a high end 370z model! This is just my view and my opinion/speculation.
Nevertheless I am waiting to see the real thing as well as some in depth specs. I still have high hope from the Subaru version and if all goes well, I will buy it. |
